A bit of a stupid thread, but I like stupid (its friday and going home in a few hours) so I will join in...
To start off with. Most teachers work very hard. I know a few and they dont get load of time off.
What is wrong with having the right to strike? You think that you should take that away from the workers so that they can get walked over even more?
Some of you guys work really long hours and work really hard... That is not a really bad thing. I work in an office and im sure quite a few would hate to do that. I enjoy working 7:30 to 4 and finishing early on Fridays. I get time to be with my kids and missus. That is what is important to me..
I have striked in the past...many moons ago.. it stopped us getting a really cr*p deal and the management taking things off us...

Blimey. Everyone chooses what career they want to follow. Self employed, teachers, firefighters ect. Why do you think it's fair that a contract that you sign up to, a pension that you sign up you should be changed half way through your career. You would certainly be ****ed off if you signed a contract and suddenly they decided to pay you half, or double the length for no extra money. If you get a ****ty job you can walk away, people in the public sector cannot walk straight to another job. Teachers basically look after our kids for 12 + years while you work, don't get paid a fortune and only get holidays at the most expensive time of year. I'd like to see you look after 30 unruly kids at 68 years old. ( Yes my wife is a teacher and I see how hard she works everyday ). Don't blame public sector workers for defending their contracts and work conditions. Rant over.

Its simple, the private sector changes with the times as it happens, if you are not happy you have to go or are sacked. The public sector does not want to change (and you cant blame them if its for the worst) but if it does not this country is going to go under THERE IS NO MORE MONEY FOR BIG PENSIONS ETC.

Just to add one more thing. Did you know that firefighters pay around 12% of their salaryinto their pension. It's not like they get it for nothing.

Yup!

They pay in so little compared to what they will get out.

If you don't believe me, go and see a financial advisor, ask for a final salary, index linked pension and that you can pay 12% of you salary and see what they off you........ you won't get much in return, believe me.

Contracts get changed all the time....the current account i signed up to isn't the same i've got now. (remembering the days of 5% interest :( lol ) My vodafone contract isn't the same as i signed up too.... Different to a working situation i know, but contracts do change - it's not right, i agree, but it happens.

At least they get holidays, you try take a holiday whilst being SE - phone goes off whilst sat lazing around a pool "no i can't make it" customer finds someone else, and they stick with them...not so bad if it's a one off payment, but if a hotel or something rings you up it's a terrible feeling.

Why can't people in the public sector walk into another job? They're not been forced to work are they...They don't want to walk into another job thats the problem, they want to stay in the public sector so you've gotta roll with the times.

I don't want to look after 30 unruly kids, hense the reason of not becoming a teacher. You can't use that as an excuse, every single person going in to teaching knows what they're throwing themselves in to.

I understand people defending the teaching union when it's close to the hearts, but if you look at it from an unbiased perspective, you'll see the points of views of all of us who graft our balls off....

get dealt the ---- hand - get non-paying customers - have contracts fall through - have employees steal work from you - have so called mates give work to other contractors ect...

Life isn't always fair, you just gotta take the ---- times and compare them againts the good - it's life.

This thread has gone far too deep now lol. But disagreements are what makes life so intersting. I do see why the teachers are striking to be fair, i just don't like the idea of striking, think its scummy to be honest.

Both my mum and dad were teachers mate.

I can speak from experience that it was not the 9-5 job with endless holidays that people think it is.

It pretty much killed my dad and my mum often worked from 6am to 11pm taking into account marking, lesson planning, redoing lesson planning when the sylabus changed (constantly), dealing with nut bag kids and their even nuttier (scumbag) parents.

I have some sympathy and would rather do what I do than what they did, regardless of how crappy the construction industry is at the moment.
It is not just that either, to add, regarding their pensions, they have to pay more for longer for less, end of

How does over ÂŁ300 a month for 40 years sound to you. I make it about ÂŁ140000 they will have to pay into their pension. How good do you think the pension is.

So ÂŁ140K into a money purchase = ÂŁ4500 per ÂŁ100K = 1.4 x 4.5 = ÂŁ6300 per year and not index linked

So go and ask a competent Independent Financial Advisor if you don't believe me.

ALL Public sector final salary pensions pay out far, far more than the people contribute.

Hmmm sounds better than mine at currently 350 a month.
I'm just back from a weeks holiday.i don't get 9 weeks a year .ive had a week all year.
i still have to deal with the general day to day ****e when I'm away.
this is the path I've chosen so I'll just grin and bare it.
if the public sector workers are so unhappy with their lot why not go and get another job?
it happens in the private sector all the time so what makes them so special?
there is a big storm brewing up north over the Grangemouth refinery at the moment.
basic story. Unite rep caught up to no good. Rep suspended. Strike action threatened.refinery owners say plant is losing 10m a month and will shut the plant.
War of attrition starts.
end result will be no winners.
public sector pay used to be lower than the private sector with bigger pensions etc though.
now it's higher pay and a lot bigger pensions.
somethings got to give.

Not wanting to rant on, it's just my brother is a fireman and wife a teacher so have a good insight to what they're fighting for. It may seem to many that they are greedy, striking is the only option they have when the gov won't even talk about it. They definitely are not well off like it's made out. Any way time to agree to disagree. rantoversmile.

Yup and my wife works for the NHS and I completely understand how little they pay in for what they get out.

The UK had pensions the world was envious about FOR all who saved until one Mr Gordon Brown raided the private pensions.

Why is it always a race to the bottom in this country?

If you look at the union strength in Australia they have much better working rights. As all the trades have strong unions that fight for workers rights.

We have a hard time because we let politicians walk all over us.

Australia have got it right on most counts. I have relatives over there who say you have more chance of ******** the Pope than getting in there. Unlike the UK they are very fussy who make it into their country, and their politicians listen to the people far more than the freaks over here do.
