just after some advice really on solving problem of cable being to short in consumer unit, what is the best method of extending cables be it only a short length of extension to comfortably reach protective device, neutral etc.

I personally would use an insulated crimp ferrule connection.

although thru crimps dont have a bs number and are therefore not recognised id use them, otherwise a choc block would surfice

Personally- Choccys are a no-no for me, there is too much copper on show, especially with the bigger ones.
If any cables were ever short on a new board we had installed (heaven forbid), we would use thru crimps. If I was testing a board and someone had put choccys in, I would condem it (IMHO).

I would tend not to worry about the actual amperage of the crimps themselves but to make sure that you use the correct colour / size.
