I have been selected to take part in an online forum by the IET about the state of the industry. If you have anything you wish to raise then please detail them in BULLET FORM. I will then raise these in the forum on Wednesday evening.

Please no long narrative rants, just succinct bullet points.

Thanks, and lets hope this can change things!

so are we all in favour of a 'registered electricians scheme then?

on an equal footing with gas-safe?

What do those guys pay? and how often? What professional back-up do they get?

It seems to me that we need to align ourselves with the gas industry for fair treatment and public acknowledgment?

Your thoughts please.

Think its about ÂŁ85 a year with very occasional site visits, 3 years after the local assessor knows that your work is good.

Why, in this day and age, are we having to constantly hope that the electrics fairies just happen to isolate installations for us at convenient times by pulling the DNO fuse?

1. Stop saying you must join a Scheme member under the European Free Trade Act this is illegal if you are qualified and insured then you must be allowed to ply your trade.
2. After all the changes in the last year ie BRB to BGB Onsite guide,ISI&TEE new cops , PIR to EICR,Documentation , C&G qualifications we need stability not more costs on a small business. These were very poorly managed without a thought of how the industry could consume this.
3. Scheme providors refuse to police their own members when the do not comply thus undermining the Scheme providor.
4. There is a massive conflict of interests with Schem providors ie they push to change the rules but also sell the courses so that you can comply.
5. Because Scheme providors are sales driven there is a massive rush for people to train up as electricians in a matter of weeks thus diluting standards within the trade.

The Iet has the main duty of constructing and amending the regulations

Does it have an interest in how those regulations are implemented in practice.
If so,what involvement would it consider

Points 2-5 understood and note taken. I don't have enough understanding of European trade law to argue this unless you can guide me to specific legislation.

many thanks.

To be honest with you, I can't be asked to go looking for them all.
Here's some that I've picked up on, without looking.
The Table referring to Earthing conductor and main protective bonding conductor CSAs.
The minimum CSA for an earthing conductor for both TN-S and TN-C-S is indicated as being 6mm².
Whereas in BS7671, the minimum for TN-S is 2.5mm², and for TN-C-S is 10mm².
The diagrams for the high integrity earthing conductors.
Supposed to be showing two CPCs, each connected to a separate terminal at the socket-outlets, yet they only show one conductor on the RFC diagram.
In the OSG, cooker switches are supposed to be within 2m of the cooker.
In BS7671 there is no requirement to have a cooker switch, and there hasn't been a requirement in the Regulations since the 14th edition.

Can we have more public information for the general public/customers so they can choose an electrician and not a diyer.

hi mate. first off, can you change your humorous tag at the bottom of your page as mussels live on the ocean floor and 'muscles' control bodily function!

I think that your point may be better raised with the Electrical Safety Council, but I will take note, thanks for the chat earlier

godbless
xx

Spin, the OSG amalgamates the IET regs with the building regs, hence some things not being in the BGB
To my mind, the OSG if followed should result in an installation that complies with BS7671.
Not as in the case with the under sized earth conductor, one that not only fails to comply with BS7671, but one which the DNOs would likely refuse to connect.
