Hi guys, could you please take a moment to review the electrician's work on my flat and leave a comment as to its quality.

Switches and sockets were placed in various strange positions without my agreement. He has moved them where required but they're still not 100% and are not centered and measured properly on the walls.

We had agreed that all wires would be chased into the brickwork inside plastic conduit. I am disappointed to see so much raw cable buried within the plaster without conduit.

Thanks for your input,

The worrying point for me, is that the NICEIC Certificate posted by the OP lists this guy as an ''Approved Contractor''!! If that's the case what chance does this industry stand?? Unless of course that Cert, is a fake!!
well...its the standard of the work that will shine on....
it certainly has here...lol...
it cant be real that cert....

If the so called sparkie is actually a legit member of the NICEIC the issue is the NICEIC is a money making body that is just a name and nothing more, as soon as you make a complaint at one of their members they take little steps and in reality nothing is done because it costs them money to lose a member any body that let you choose what work they inspect is set up basically to earn profit regardless of competence of members ...... i could get a pro sparky to do a few jobs a year for me and get my head only around testing and be a right cowboy and in their eys im legit regardless of my competence.
I have experience in complaining to both NICEIC and even local council clark of works about very dangerous work in a school where the neutral was fused to a DB..... clark of works said he couldn't do anything and NICEIC just said they had forwarded a letter and no further action they can take as they have no authority..... basically if they kick them out they lose money. Later found out the clark of works was overseeing the original job where this dangerous boo boo was made and he would have been putting his own job on the line to chase the case up..... after a long chat its been agreed he refuses to allow said company access to any local council funded jobs and ive clearly expressed if he does then ill submit the evidence + report him.

The thick and thin of this is all governing bodies like to take money and make profit but refuse to act hard on those members that fail the standards .. they have zero legal rule to punish any member all they can do is cancel their membership .....but OH NO THATS A PROFIT MARGIN DOWN!!!!!!

Ive been saying for years they play the safety card every year in consultations to justify their existance

if the person you hire to carry out this work is competent to do so....but also wants to use this job for his assesment...then theres nothing ...and i repeat nothing wrong with that....
it will be assessed as per the rules for part P scheme membership....it will be notified to buildings control in the normal way....you will get a certificate for an electrical installation...together with its schedule of inspections...and schedule of tests..
Part P scheme membership is renewed annually...and members work is assesed anually
just because someone claims to be NIC doesn`t make the standard of their work any more (or less) compliant...
if you must know i`m with elecsa...

Im with aldi :)

but the cats outa the bag now....
we`v all seen it, had a rant, then a chuckle...
the question is:
whats the O/P going to do about it...
theres plenty of good, honest, decent electricians in here....
i`m sure there will be someone down your way who will have a look at it for you....

The op should be thankful if dipzy was to go back for him

you don't get it do you? Read this very carefully. Hackney council is the freeholder of the building. They require that any electrician doing work on their properties be certified by an electrical compentency scheme. Dipsy has no such qualification and had a go at getting his work signed off by a certified electrician. I asked the council if this would be acceptable, they declined. Please let that issue drop now.

On the positive side at least you are not out of pocket as you have not paid yet. If you are not happy then don't pay, if he's been there 2 days then he will just have to write that off. If he is with Niceic then complain to them, if there is anything dodgy about the certificate then that is fraud- either way if you don't pay then if it does go to small claims then I cannot see a court demand you pay him anything.

I would suggest a polite firm letter/email stating that you consider the work below par and you cannot use him further as you have no confidence in his workmanship to create an audit trail of correspondence.

I wish you the best of luck, it's a stressful situation but at least you still have the funds to complete the work.

Having read 2 pages of responses and looked at the photos, there is only 1 course of action.

Sack the builder, plumber and sparky.

Good luck.

Yes , and as the council are familiar with the procedures for these properties I would have asked them for a list of the contractors they have been happy with.
