The petition is to amend Part P of the Building Regulations to allow Qualified Electricians to self certify their work under the Competent Person Scheme and register with a Competent Person Scheme without the need to obtain a further Part P Certificate or have to mandatory register with a self appointed industry body.

Amend Part P Building Regulations - e-petitions

It is not about compromising safety or circumventing registration - it is about getting the proper recognition for qualified electricians.

Thank you

I will support you

Restricting electricians from doing work when considering that the country deems ok for someone new to the trade just doing a few hours and a regs exam

It's only in this crazy land that such things take place

It will do little but it still needs to be supported

Thank you for your support, i just felt something needed to be said and i have sent the details of the petition to all the self appointed self regulated industry bodies, the union (Unite) the electrical safety council and the JIB. Like you i don't think it will change anything but I feel its tantamount to unfairly restricting myself and others from practicing the trade they have been properly trained to do

1.22 of part p already covers this
Yes it does, but most if not all LA Building Control only accept from "registered" electricians hence my petition asks that where electricians can demonstrate "proper" qualifications they should be allowed to be registered under the self certification scheme withnout the need for a Part P cert or be a member of a self appointed and self regulated industry body.

It is also up to the authority to decide what they want to do to verify your competency which will no doubt attract a charge.

There will be less notifiable jobs after April so maybe not the same need to be in a Part P scheme? Maybe they'll drop the fees?

By using schemes they have outsourced the vetting & regulation of the register and it that saves building control doing it themselves. If LABCs started local self cert schemes then there is no obvious reason why it would cost less than belonging to a scheme - LABCs would need to do all the admin that schemes do and in theory schemes should be competing to keep costs down.

1.22 (new 3.8 - 3.12) allows you to work like a DIY'er  but you'd assume that BC might be happier working with you than someone like myself.

As far as I'm aware, any qualified electrician can join a scheme without the need for a Part P certificate.
I don't quite understand why there needs to be a petition to allow something that's already allowed?

Can you let me know how you understand it as your right, if there is a scheme that allows an electrician with 36 years experience, C&G Parts 1, 2 and C and the 17th edition to join without an additional Part P or registering with NICIEC or the like I would be interested to know which one it is.. I'll be joining straight away and ending the petition - thanks for the info

You can register with the NICEIC, Napit Elecsa or whom ever, which ever competent persons scheme you desire.
You don't need an additional Part P certificate in order to do so.
That's for people who have no qualifications.

Irrespective of the meaning, it's a pity that the petition contains some rather questionable grammar:

'...or have to mandatory register with a self appointed industry body.'

I guess the word you were looking for was 'mandatorily'? Any chance of getting it changed?

i suppose when you put yourself up to be counted you will inevitably attract some criticism and maybe it's not quite grammatically correct but I do feel passionate about the issue and I am doing it to protect the interests of fellow electricians. If you want to place a grammatically correct petition on the HM Government website I would happily sign yours given that you have taken the time to read and comment on mine.

1) "registered under the self certification scheme" Registered with whom?
2) What do you mean by "without the need for a part p certificate"

sometimes exuberance takes over.. clearly joining NICIEC or any of the other bodies that allows an electrician to self certify is expensive and in some cases not appropriate for the amount of work they do. The second point about Part P certification was aimed at the qualification that is being issued to kitchen fitters and the like after a quick course not the issued certificate of compliance etc... Hope that clears it up
