The petition is to amend Part P of the Building Regulations to allow Qualified Electricians to self certify their work under the Competent Person Scheme and register with a Competent Person Scheme without the need to obtain a further Part P Certificate or have to mandatory register with a self appointed industry body.

Amend Part P Building Regulations - e-petitions

It is not about compromising safety or circumventing registration - it is about getting the proper recognition for qualified electricians.

Thank you

You can register with the NICEIC, Napit Elecsa or whom ever, which ever competent persons scheme you desire.
You don't need an additional Part P certificate in order to do so.
That's for people who have no qualifications.

and it costs a fortune to register - as a competent electrician why can't a simple cost effective register be run, such as the JIB that allows competent electricians to self certify rather than expensive membership of self appointed regulators.

Well doesnt exist here in northern ireland cause they trust us lol and believe me I'd install a shower if I lived in England with it without any scheme

don't let the negative stop you...

Thanks for the comments and the advice.. I am genuinely looking out for the interests of qualified and competent electricians everywhere - i have spoken to my MP who is aware of the detail so although the petition may not be gramatically correct she understands the issues.

Sparks don't stand in arms they slag each other off and pick faults for personal gain.. Sparking ain't sustainable , we do too good of a job and were mugs for letting them dictate and change goal posts all the time. They theory's never changed so why all ****

i suppose when you put yourself up to be counted you will inevitably attract some criticism and maybe it's not quite grammatically correct but I do feel passionate about the issue and I am doing it to protect the interests of fellow electricians. If you want to place a grammatically correct petition on the HM Government website I would happily sign yours given that you have taken the time to read and comment on mine.

Sorry for the dig. No real offence intended. It just bugs me when important stuff has errors; you see it all too frequently nowadays. No point in having two petitions; just confusing.

Actually, I suspect that you wouldn't regard me as a 'Qualified Electrician' anyway!

sometimes exuberance takes over.. clearly joining NICIEC or any of the other bodies that allows an electrician to self certify is expensive and in some cases not appropriate for the amount of work they do. The second point about Part P certification was aimed at the qualification that is being issued to kitchen fitters and the like after a quick course not the issued certificate of compliance etc... Hope that clears it up
Right so it's self certification without joining any of the Competent Person's Schemes. Wasn't that what existed before Part P was invented? Or do you mean we should be able to register our JIB cards or quals with some official body who will police who is doing what electrical work for whom? If it's the latter how is that going to work and cost?
As it stands at present, the farce is that the minimum requirement is C&G 2382 ie the regs course, there is no need for anyone to do the domestic installers course (or part p course as it's known)
How do you define qualified when all the regs calls for is competency?
Wayne I think what you're trying to achieve would be a good thing but when the responsible government minister's ear is being whispered in by NIC NAPIT Elecsa et al and they're telling him not to worry because everything is hunky dory then I think it's doomed to fail.
Sorry to pee on your fireworks mate

Competent person's scheme should be for non-qualified electricians working on a very narrow, defined set of tasks only, and that is the best compromise I can offer. What should be put in place is a proper register of qualified electricians that can work for remuneration in other people's houses (and elsewhere).

It should be cut and dried. Either you are qualified, or you aren't. Either you can carry out electrical work, or you can't.

Can someone please tell me what the ... is a Part P 'qualification'?

To finish, we can all wish for what we want, but while multiple organisations are making good money, nothing will change.

Oh, and being fairly new to to the game (7 years) what was the set-up before the scams?

Thanks.
