hi

bit of a strange one but does anyone know how thick the plywood on the cieling of a flat garage roof usually is?? need to put up some light fittings but dont want to cause it to leak by piercing the menbrane or actual roof covering, fittings not very heavy 4 1/4 inch screws should do. be a pain in the --- and look ugly if i have to batten between exsposed joists

cant believe you are really considering screwing in to the roof :frown2:
could have screwed the lights in to some battens in the time it took to ask the question, no offence mate but it is a bit daft

Well that happened to me - took my car to Kwik Fit to get a few things sorted (exhaust, brakes, new tyre) picked it up and the handbrake had about twice as much travel on it. I mentioned that and they tightened it, but said it was strange because they hadn't touched it. Then the stereo kept cutting out and the ABS light flashed; took it back to them, they plugged their fault code reader and couldn't find anything wrong.
Next day the headlights were flashing, stopped at the traffic lights and the speedometer went to 100mph. Left it with them for their expert to sort out, it was done by the end of the day. Apparently it was a problem with the 'earth' - according to the mechanic, cars use the tyres as an earth electrode (not sure if that was a deliberate wind-up).

Garage customers are right to be suspicious of mechanics.

could it have been anything else?
Rubber is not the best thing to use as an earthing conductor

LOL that's what I thought - the guy didn't seem to know what he was talking about; if I were installing an earth electrode I can think of better conductors than rubber filled with air.
In fact rubber and air are some of the better insulators.

Depends on the make, some cars you have to diconnect the handbrake to remove the exhast & on some there is an earth strap to the exhast, which can cause problems.
Had a customer with a Metro who had a puncher outside kwikfit, they charged for a new tyre & 4 new shocks,we had serviced the car a week before customer came back to complain about the service, took her & the car back to kwikfit & asked them to show us the new shocks.they never had shocks fitted on that year of metro, full refund surprise surprise

Kwik fit fitters are the Electrical Trainee of sparks world.
I suppose the reason I use them is because they're open 'late', they're open weekends, they can often do the work there and then, and they're next to the station, a short walk from where I live.
I've heard you have to 'watch them' which I do as much as I can, but I reckon the same can be said for any garage. One difference with Kwik Fit is they're a national chain so you have some recourse if things go wrong.

Surprising how many people would have gone on non the wiser. I really hated working on hydrospastic suspension... Morris Princess's were the worst.
