Hello all,

Been asked to look at a project involving running power to CCTV cameras but over stupidly long distances, just wondering whether anyone on here had any experience with such things that could maybe help me out. And by long distances I mean up too 1 mile!!

Cheers,
Gavin

With over a mile of signal cable what tx protocol are they using? What cable are you running ie CAT5, CAT6, fiber optic?

I'd definitely be looking at wireless and solar/wind with a local battery at each point.

What exactly is the application of thissystem. The trend for security is moving toward GSM / GPRS cameras which take pictures only when they're triggered and send them to a mobile phone and/or a remote monitoring and response company.

the system isnt being used for security purposes as such, but as a remote monitoring system for events that are run over a track approx 1 mile long. my client wants his clients to be able to look at what it happening on the track at any time, and follow the action as it goes down the course via a series of cameras. These cameras will use PTZ functionality to follow the action down their particular section of the course, and each camera will atuomatically follow the action down the course and switch to the next camera as and when required.

i hope that all makes sense!

Jeremy if you dont mind me asking what happens after a year? New hydrogen fuel cel required? Is the output 240v and do they last all day how much supply could you get out of a full charge etc
The system will last a year running solar when there's enough light, then switch to hydrogen. The only thing that can run out is the Hydrogen cylinder. BOC delivers another cylinder, swap it over and off you go. We're currently running a camera that can be remotely controlled and viewed via an app off a 3G dongle. I suppose if the location was so remote that no phone signal was available, satellite would be an option. I don't know how much info I can give here regarding commercial sensitivity, but if you might be interested, get in touch with the office

Signal transmission isn't an issue I've covered that hurdle, what I need to do now is send either 12/230v out to 16 cameras along a one mile run, each camera position will need approx 1.5 amps of power (230v) all will be in ducting underground
I thought you said it was a camera, not an 200 w electric heater????????

There is also a lot of other equiptment going on each camera position such as transmitters and possibly gps sensors

...And don't forget to really tighten those chocky-blocks up if your linking 100m reels of t&e....seen this in ducting for time and speed monitoring of flat racing beasts. "Installer" said it was OK if you were gentle pulling it in...:6:

Don't be silly I'm not that daft! Ill use wago's instead..... ;)

You joke , but I did a gate and camera install / refurb last year . And the tos"er before me had run in 4mm T+E down a 450 m duct , but had ( And I kid you not ! ) used a combination of single socket fronts and fused spurs ( without back box's ) to joint the cable in the duct !???
It ended up snagging up the speaker cable that had been run down the same duct for the camera signal and balling it all up , I ended up having to send our cobra down with the sonde on to track every sodding blockage with the cat scan and dig it out . :willy_nilly:

Yet another job that haemorrhaged money !

Why don't people ever ask there wholesaler for the size they need.

Ive never used them but isnt there a kind of spiral hatch thing you can put in ducts every so often so your not pulling a couple hundred meters through at once
