Just had a phone call of a friend in a panic because his electric has gone off. He says all MCBs and main switches are still in the on position an nothing has tripped. He's just had a new born so didnt want to leave him in the **** so i went to have a look. He has a pre pay meter which he is adamant had money left on it. I took the DB cover off and checked for voltage at the main switch Live-Earth 240v, Neutral-Earth 240v?, Live-Neutral nothing! Initially I thought maybe the main fuse had gone but finding a supply at the main switch ruled that out. Is it likely to be a fault within the pre pay meter or have I missed somthing really simple?

Spoke to my mate today to see how he went on. The suppliers engineers turned up last night and ran a temporary supply from the lampost outside his house to get his supply on. Not sure what they used but due to the nature of it he said they had to spend the night basically sitting guard. Today they have started to dig the road up outside my friends house, unbeknown to us last night next door had lost there supply aswell. It's a strange one, I've asked him to keep me posted I'd be interested to hear what they find

and here`s the moral of the story....
if supply has gone to your property.....a quick glance outside will/should reveal wether..or not its just your property thats affected...

Not really it was late so people could of easily been in bed, hence lights switched off! If I'd have drove down a pitch black street I could of put money on there being a problem on the suppliers side. As it was though only my friends house and next door were/are effected

the point i am making here though is you check first...before anything else....OK so it was late etc....but lets say it was early evening (high demands etc)...and theres an outage to your property....so, what are you goin to do?...fumble about in the dark before checking that other properties still have power?...

If it was a reasonable hour I could have gone round and asked a neighbour if they had power, as it wasn't on this occasion and the neighbours on the other side did seem to have power what's one to assume?

never assume. always rely on your own senses. if it looks like fish, smells like fish, tastes like fish, it probably is fish.
I agree but could someone enlighten me as to how I would/could of checked whether the neighbours had lost power? I certainly wasn't going to go banging on at that time of night. There were no lights on but is that such an unusual thing given the time?
