Just had a phone call of a friend in a panic because his electric has gone off. He says all MCBs and main switches are still in the on position an nothing has tripped. He's just had a new born so didnt want to leave him in the **** so i went to have a look. He has a pre pay meter which he is adamant had money left on it. I took the DB cover off and checked for voltage at the main switch Live-Earth 240v, Neutral-Earth 240v?, Live-Neutral nothing! Initially I thought maybe the main fuse had gone but finding a supply at the main switch ruled that out. Is it likely to be a fault within the pre pay meter or have I missed somthing really simple?

I agree but could someone enlighten me as to how I would/could of checked whether the neighbours had lost power? I certainly wasn't going to go banging on at that time of night. There were no lights on but is that such an unusual thing given the time?
as has already been said....its one way to verify whether or not the problem lies in just your own property.....not that it would be acceptable to go round drummin on the door at arse o`clock.....
it was never suggested you do that....was it...

No they havnt maybe I've just got the wrong end of the stick. Just the way you said in your earlier post about the moral of the story being etc etc, came across to me as being a little funny almost like I should of known. Like I said its probably me just taking it the wrong way

Finally power is restored, they told my mate the cable had blown underground, how likely is this? Been fine for years and then suddenly bang!!
because it will probably have been subjected to more than it was ever expected to handle over the years as more and more demands are made of it....although paper leads can handle considerable amounts of current for the CSA
it may be that as the tarmack gangs have come along with machinery and vibrating rollers etc this may have disturbed it....

Back when i was younger living in bedsit land I noticed my coin meter was pretty loose on the wall so I just lifted it up and laid it flat on the ground face down I had free electric for ages till i got grassed up by my mate.

An old spark on site explained to me that method It was an old meter. :fuk2:
