Discuss Pricing Principles ??? in the Business Related area at ElectriciansForums.net

ive recently gone self employed and if it helps its slow for me too, got few estimates out a couple off the back of foreigners but obviously estimated through company books at company rates so overheads etc, so cost more, havnt heard a thing!! just got cple of mains changes and outside lights, fault for landlord, just push yourself through website, get a google adwords campaigne running, and register on google maps, it costs nothing.
flyer everyone and anything you can, i must have walked 20 miles in the last 2 weeks, stay positive and dont as another member rightly said look desperate when you go to price a job as they will think your a cowboy or a gippo, always look smart, I polish my dewalt leather boots before every estimate visit and make sure the blackberry is on show, have got my mrs to call me during estimate to give the impression of being busy, its all about the sell when you walk in, and dont be afraid of pricing things to what you think is a good rate, if they dont want it, f u c k them , take an advert out in the local rag and just wait, if you are JIB then there is always agency work until things pick up/
A lot is to do with who you know too so network and meet people.
a few of you may scoff and say well hes giving this advice and he isnt busy, well ive only set up 4 weeks ago , web site is sorted flyers business cards and letter heads done, and have a contact for a fair bit of public sector work once nic membership is through so its all looking good
approved contractor lists are good too. franchises such as BK maccies and the dealerships although most will require niceic before they consider you
hope this helps. just chill have a beer and relax......the phone will ring!!!!!!

Thanks for the positive message.

I hear what you are saying about NICEIC membership.
I had one job (Periodic) completely agreed - and then lost it because the property was to be rented to a local authority - and they would only accept a NICEIC certificate.
I am registered with Elecsa.
I am actually going to register with NICEIC as well now - just because every time this comes up with customers, they don't ask about experience or qualifications - they ask about NICEIC.
I just need to get a couple more jobs under my belt before I apply.
Elecsa have been fine to deal with - but they just don't seem to have the public profile and "weight" of NICEIC.

Thanks again

CH

i got conned by an online training company which i wasnt too happy about. I wanted to avoid membership schemes and inform building control myself, and had heard through 'the grapevine' like you do, that if you did a part p course then with the part p registration number you could inform LABC yourself and save the cost of them inspecting...GREAT I thought!!!!
so not wasting time I contacted a training provider and told the sales man on the phone, im setting up as self employed and want to do a part p course so I can inform LABC myself do you do the part p course?
What qulaifications do you have? he asks, told him fully qualified, JIB, 2330 level 3, nvq level 3 , 17th edition and 2391
oh thats great he said you only need the short course due to qualifications/
SMASHING I said and asked so this means i can sign anything off domesticly?
Yes absolutly anything, now thats 267 quid please and the course is done on line.
I pay the money and take the online course ( studied bloody hard too ) booked the assesor to examin me at my house so he arrives with his laptop at 6.45am (im thinking at this point these people are amazing coming out so early!!!)
I did the exam which id spent weeks preparing for, 20 questions, usual city and G format.
he asks me if im finished? told him think so. he then vets all my answers before submitting them, correcting a couple so i got the full mark!!!!!!!!!!
what a pile of rubbish! so no need to even look at a book to pass this!!!!!
put the shock of this to oneside and looked forward to certificate and reg number arriving!
nice shiny city and guilds level 3 building regulations certificate arrives, i call them and ask where my registration number is?, oh just contact the NIC for it!!!!!
I told him the only reason for me paying for this course was to sign everything off myself , he said this course is just like doing your theory test before doing your driving test and the nic require it for you to join them!!!
I was pretty ****ed off as you can imagine as they wouldnt refund me the money id paid. so I called NICEIC, ive now had to pay 450 quid to register as a domestic installer and all they wanted off me was that id done the 17th edition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
needless to say I have warned everyone about this training company they are called ADS training consultants - google them!
so could have saved nearly 300 quid! although my cert does look nice and shiny in its frame - not worth 300 tho!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BEWARE THE CONMEN!!!!!!

I've been trading on my own about a year now. Christmas '08 was a joke, did a job on December 16th then never had another job until March '09!!! It was real bad!!!

My girlfriend put a business card in everybody's Christmas card, it worked, 2 jobs came in. Not a lot I know, but it was a start, and how many people stand behind those 2 new customers?

The biggest asset I have is I'm good with people and I'm honest. I'm not the cheapest or the most expensive by far, but I look after my regular customers (factory owners and local farmers). If there's a problem, I aim to respond within 2 working days, regardless of how busy I am. I replace broken parts with no question (within warranty) and labour free.People love a service with no hassle or argument!

Us 'Brits' as consumers get a rough deal, as a provider of a service, my aim is not to give the public a hard time. I know only to well how it feels!

Drifted a little from the first post, but I think you know where I'm going with it?!

Good luck and hang in there...;)
