PVC or Galv 20mm Conduit

hi there

after a lil advice re overhead supply to an out building. The outbuilding is no more than 1.8 meters from the house surrounded by a tarmaced drive and concrete paving (hence overhead route). Maximum height is 2.6 meters from point to point entry,which i know is below the 3 m minimium requirements but common sense must be appplied, i intend to supply via conduit. Now the regulations state the use of steel conduit but do not mention if PVC conduit can be used.Now i understand the reasoning for steel conduit to provide impact protection. i was wondering if anybody had any thoughts or advise re using PVC conduit for this short run where due to location there are no impact risks.

use either! pvc will be cheaper and if used in conjunction with RCD at origin it will be fine!

Personally I would not consider PVC conduit. Such a short run should be a doddle in galv.

thanks for your replies guys i checked the regs to check minimum height as i thought id be a little low but was not sure if PVC could be used as regulations state steel conduit. either way is easy enough just have to earth the conduit if i have to use galve

It will be very floppy over 1.8m if you use PVC mate. Especially in the sun. Id def use galv or SWA

Same - i reckon that length of pvc conduit would bow and look rubbish.
I'd use galv or catenary wire and flex.

nowt wrong with black japanned conduit, but it seems to be dissappearing fast, so much so that so that some sparks don't even know what it is!

Is this a dialect thing, as in the south east we call it black enamel rather that black japaned, as black japan were black round head woodscrews, or am I just an old fart and it's all changed.

japanned refers to the coating, be it conduit or screws.

This must definately be a slang term or a modern term, and I have never heard of it. I just googled black japan conduit and all I got was a horse called conduit is the 5/2 favourite in a race in Japan .
