hi there

after a lil advice re overhead supply to an out building. The outbuilding is no more than 1.8 meters from the house surrounded by a tarmaced drive and concrete paving (hence overhead route). Maximum height is 2.6 meters from point to point entry, which i know is below the 3 m minimium requirements but common sense must be appplied, i intend to supply via conduit. Now the regulations state the use of steel conduit but do not mention if PVC conduit can be used. Now i understand the reasoning for steel conduit to provide impact protection. i was wondering if anybody had any thoughts or advise re using PVC conduit for this short run where due to location there are no impact risks.

many thanks

not as old as me mate. things were much simpler in the old days. 7/029, star chisels, brace & bit, walls made trom bricks, cavities were in your teeth, woodwork was made from wood, insulation referred to cable covering, not 3 ft thick itchy poo fibreglass, and energy saving was turning things off when not in use. happy days.

I would personally opt for the Steel Conduit any day. The steel conduit will be stronger and would look better with age compared to PVC. PVC would sag. Also the steel conduit would give a higher degree of mechanical protection.

What’s wrong with black japanned conduit? A lick of red lead on the joints, sound as a pound!
What is Black Japanned Conduit? Could you describe it? Is it super tube?

just steel conduit with a lick of black paint. cheaper than galv.
Yea I have saw this in older buildings but never used it...its use must be dying out. Has anyone ever used "Super Tube"? This is a Black PVC pipe with a thin(ish) metal between the PVC and Cables. Very hard to make this stuff look good. It is a curse. When I first used it it came coiled up like a cobra and it was very dificult to straighten out, but now our firm uses it in straight lengths.

I have used the MT Supertube on rolls and found it time consuming when straightening it so I designed and got a dispenser made for the rolls of Supertube which you draw of the length you require. Quicker to install than screwed steel conduit. PVC conduit in some applications will stand the test in food factories with a lot of water and wash down daily. Depends on the application. Steel looks good when installed well. Galvafroid isnt the best for the threads as I think it doesnt mix with the cutting paste nd falls off. a good oil based would be better.

Use galvanized conduit for exterior work, after all that is what it was designed for!!! Black enamel conduit is basically for dry locations. A 1.8 span should mean that you don't need any couplings and therefore no exposed thread to treat. Undisturbed, it will probably see you out, as far as life span ...lol!!!
