yep, competency isn't all about owning bits of paper, but unfortunately it seems thats the way it's going. You need certificates even to get a job cutting the grass these days!
 
Your thinking what I'm thinking some Pv forum members on here are not sparks
tbh, I wouldn't class myself as a spark as such either, though I've got the relevant base level qualifications (part p, 17th etc), and did a fair amount of sparkies mate type stuff when working rigging up outdoor festival sites and the like between getting trained in solar in 2000, and there actually being any work in the field.

I'm more of a renewables specialist who knows enough about electrics to do what I need to do for that specific task, but wouldn't want to go wiring up a factory or something. I've got 2 time served sparks working for us who do 95% of the electrical work for us though.
