Hi all
i qualified as an electrician in 1990 to jib standard doing the city and guilds 236 part 1 and 2 and am-1 and 2, i then moved to work in the republic of ireland untill recently when the recession wrecked the construction industry. I am now looking to work in northern ireland and have been offered a job wiring, and comissioning state of the art pig houses ( dont laugh its big buisness) my question is will i be able to work here and issue certificates for the work ?? what courses will i need ? ido i have to do the 17th edition update ?? do i need to do the 2391 ?? do i need to register with nic-eic ??
sorry for all the questions but been away so long i have lost track of whats what here.

cheers

john

Whether you need the 2391 and 17th ed, I suppose depends entirely on your employer, both would go some way to prove competence (Iam not suggesting you are incompetent BTW :laugh3:).
There is no 17th ed. update course now (as of amd 1), it will need to be the full course.

As to NIC etc. registration, you only really need to be registered if you are working in dwellings/domestic (is part P required in N.Ireland ?), OTOH your employer may need to be an approved contractor, and unless you are either working self employed, or as QS for the firm you are working for, I would have said not.

Others will correct me if Iam wrong:28:

cheers spark 68.
the company that have offered me the job are currently using a contractor to install and certify their units and they are solely farm dwellings i will be working on. they are not an approved contractor as they have always used an outside contractor for this type of work but want to bring it "in house" so to speak, where does this leave me as the sole electrician in the company ? how do they become an approved contractor ? and what certs do i have to issue with the installations ?

cheers

QS = Qualified supervisor
AC = Approved contractor

So if they are looking to bring this in house, are you going to be their QS ?

If you are, then you would probably need both 17th and 2391, are you also signing off and testing others work ?, as I believe only the NIC AC status has provision for this (but will stand to be corrected on this).

It depends partly on what your employer's insurance and their clients and their insurance etc. require, on whether you need AC status or not.

Have a look on the NICEIC website for the requirements of AC.

Sorry I cannot give you a definitive answer to all your questions, as there are a few unknowns at the moment, see if other posters can give you a more accurate answer.

i wont be signing off on others work as i would be the only one working on the installations , as to wether of not i would be their qs ? good question mate, its a point i will have to raise with them tomorrow. i intend to get the 17th done and the 2391 but would not like to take the job only for them to realise the insurers need more off me and kick me out before i get the courses off them.

There is nothing to stop you doing the installs, but you may need to get an outside AC firm to certify for now.

You don't actually need any qualifications or registration to Test and Inspect your own work and sign the paper work in a non-domestic setting , you just have to be competent, but as I said it depends on other factors whether this is acceptable to other parties outside of your control.
