Quick Heat Question

C

cyberjunction

Hi Guys

Just a quick one.. I have to extend a 6mm cooker socket slightly using crimps, my question is do I need to heat shrink all three wires and the outer sheath or just the outer sheath? I am using insulated butt connectors,

Many thanks

if the crimps are in an enclosure, then there is no need to heat shrink at all.
also when using heat shrink to join cable joints, use the stuff with the glue in it. this is then waterproof, and less likely to fail.

And a very good joint they make too!!

Spent the best part of yesterday helping a neighbour repair a well pump (160 feet). The original supply joint (a taped up connector strip) had rubbed away on the side the PVC well wall, probably every time the pump was started due to the pump twisting on the flexible riser pipe..

Anyway, i used just such a joint technique to repair the pumps supply cable, using heatshrink butt crimps, then an over sheath of normal heat shrink, followed by the thicker glue lined heatshrink over sheath covering the overall joint. This stuff, when shrunk and cooled is like a hard heavy gauge pipe sealed to the cable by the glue lining. One things for sure, that joint isn't going to fail anytime soon ...lol!!!

Had a 250' deep well 50KW torpedo pump returned from repair. The clowns had cut the cable 10’ from the motor so the joint was going to be under water. At that time Scotch did a taped joint using perforated nylon tape, which was then surrounded by a restrictor tape. An injection nipple had to be taped in to the restrictor layer along with a vent nipple at the top. The resin was pumped in with a mastic gun. It lasted 12 years under 80’ of water before the pump failed, not the joint.
