The electricity supply to my consumer unit dropped. The unit's in the middle of the house so the distributor (UK Power Networks) have said they'll provide power to the front of the house but I have to pay for a meter box and for an electrician to run a cable from the meter box to the consumer unit in the middle of the house. Is that right? Should the distributor be responsible for the power to the consumer unit or just the front of the house?

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Cheers.

when you say dropped what do you mean, have you lost power to your house.

Power just stopped. They checked the tails coming into the meter and they were dead. UK Power Networks then dug up my drive and worked out that the power was ok at the front of the house so the old cable must have burnt through somewhere internal to the building but they didn't know where and weren't going to look. Hence, they want me to move the meter and do an easy connection for them. I want them to cable the meter in where it is - a little harder for them...

i'd stick to my guns over this. it's their equipment that's failed, and they have a legal obligation to repair it. contact OFGEN.

depends on the extension, could they have done it easily before the extension? if not as tel says stick to your guns

Quick update: UK Power Networks sent their cheif bod over who confirmed their stance that they will only provide power to the front of the house so I'll have to run a cable from a meter box there, up along the front and side of the house and then into the consumer box (about 20m). I've contact 9 electricians, got 2 quotes in, both for over ÂŁ500!
:eek:/
