Discuss r1, rn, r2 OR R1, Rn, R2? in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Its driving me up the wall, i literally have ÂŁ200 of bloody IET books infront of me and i, struggling to find the difference between a capital and a lower case definition!......Bare with me though, i will win this battle!

Geoff i've got it all :)

Well i can't find a definition, the only conclusion i can come to is that r1 and r2 are values only obtainable off a ring final circuit and that R1+R2 is the reading from the end of a radial circuit (or the highest reading not necessarily the end). Ive based that on re-reading parts of the OSG and regs thinking of them in that context.

Can anyone give me the reg number that explains?

Thanks for the help

In all fairness search these forums and the answer is here multiple times, and being pedantically corrected, by the Feared pc crew. If trolling these board is difficult then google it, and it will give links to these forums too.

Yeah i thought (knew) the answer would be on here however i felt like i was cheating!

I have re-read that section Sintra (2.7.5) and the case changes between the section on continuity of cpc, supplementry and main bonding conductors AND the section on ring final.

So im afraid thats my (ring) final answer! The lower case symbols are reserved purely for circuits of a ring nature.

So could you possibly have a R1 or R2 measurement on a ring?

Thanks Archie

yes, R1,R2 and Rn are the resistances to the mid-point of a ring as in when you measure R1+R2. r1,r2,rN are the end eo end resistances (ring only)

Bingo, thanks Geoff.

Its amazing how many times you can read a sentence and yet totally not take it in at all:mad2:.
Thats why i only made it 1/4 the way through lord of the rings.

Thanks for everyones help on that one. The end of a long week is probably not the time to be reading this stuff :)

Enjoy the rest of your evening and weekends chaps

I like this thread, reasonable question, nobody handed the answer on a plate, and the OP came back with ideas and got to the awnswer with some nudges.

Applause all round I'd say.
