Hi I have already narrowed down the fault to the ring circuit, with the ring circuit disconnected, the RCD holds in and the RCD test button works, I have tried the faulty circuit on the other RCD and the fault returns... RCD won't hold in with any sort of load on it, I have done an insulation resistance test showing <200M ohms between each, I have also done an end to end, r1 + r2 test, r1 + rn test, all good, I have been in every socket/spur and can't see any crossed wires. The test results does not show that anything is wrong. Surely if there is a trapped wire the insulation resistance test would indicate a fault or if there has been a crossed wire the my (r1 + rn) or r1 + r2 would indicate I have a problem????

What were your test results?
r1, rn & r2,
R1+R2 at every socket.
Zs at every socket.

I hope you've noted them all down?! :)
 
You say you have done an IR test L-N, L-E and N-E, and all three results >200 MOhm (not <)?

If so, was the E connected to the installation E for this test? If not, perhaps re-measure with the E for the socket RFC connected to the installation earth, just in case it now shows up a fault.

Of course he recorded the values, every one was OK. I doubt very much he did any testing other than a failed bang test.

I wonder if he’s still friends with the guy who is now sat watching a blank TV screen?

I had an RCD fault today. Diagnosed and fixed in less time than reading this thread. Just saying.

Have you tested between circuits as I suggested?
Do you mean greater than 200Mohms which is a > symbol not a <?
When you have done your Insulation resistance testing can you list your tests and results - telling us you have got over 200Mohms on all tests does not tell us you are testing the circuit correctly so please list them with results - it may sound stupid but we have had this on many occasion where we have been told all tests OK and 100 posts later find they don't know how to test properly.

Split the circuits over the 2 RCD's so that if one trips you don't lose all the power or all the lights

Its not difficult - this is covered in a round about way in the BGB - I'm hoping you do have one.

It sounds like you have the neutrals in the wrong bar (or the outgoing side of the rcd going into the wrong bar). It will hold in until load is put on it.
