Situation is: customer has installed a 6mm cable to his shed for a couple of sockets and a couple of lights. he has actually made a very good job of it, 6mm T/E in 20mm pvc conduit, all surface ( none buried.). now he wants me to supply accessories, MCBs etc. and connect up. as it's outside, i'm going with RCBO at the CU and just 2 MCBs in shed. the only down side i can see is that in the event of a trip, he'll have to walk the length of the garden and into the house to reset. apart from this, i prefer the RCD protection at source , rather than in the shed, thus protecting the 6mm. also i'm sure the regs. require RCD protection unless SWA or steel conduit is used. what are others' thoughts?

like you i prefer the protection at source so the walk to reset seems a small price to pay. Good idea from TC though as the cat sh*t gets everywhere....lol

As long as the 6mm is not buried anywhere I see no reason to put a RCD on it, just put a garage unit in the shed to cover things there. That's probably a cheaper option too

The Regs don't require that the cable be RCD protected, as it's not concealed in a wall.
What's the likelyhood of the cable being damaged?

I assume that the plastic conduit installation of the sub-main is not, over any length, self supporting? If this is the case then on a grade of probabilities it is unlikely that any damage over a period of time will happen.
RCD protection at either end would suffice.
Personally I would have run the sub-main in SWA and provide RCD/RCBO protection for the final circuits close to the point of ulitization

if i was running the cable, i would have uses SWA. been today, done most of the job. gone with RCBO at CU.

RCD at the mains for me, its a shed so no hardship to walk. rcd's only trip for a reason usually so for me its belt and braces if no earthed sheath like swa. also i put no trust in conduit down a garden in ten years where the saddle's have been ripped off the wall, that way you know when the cable has been damaged.
