If I have a distribution circuit (to a garage with accommodation upstairs) does the CU in the garage have to have RCD protection or is it sufficient for the main CU in the house that feeds the garage to have RCD protection? Just wondering about regulation 411.3.3 additional protection as there will be sockets and a shower in the garage.

Thanks for any replies

It could be either.

Have a little think about why we need rcd protection and not just for sockets etc.

It can depend on the installation method.

Is the garage a TT conversion if so all circuits will require RCD protection.
One question what sort of loading will the garage have a shower sockets and lighting may be a bit too much to supply from a spare way in the main CU.
All circuits in a room containing a bath or shower require additional protection.

You say accommodation upstairs. Is it for a member of your family or a lodger/rental? If so, they will not want to be knocking on your door to reset an RCD.
