Discuss RCD - Skilled or Instructed Person in the Periodic Inspection Reporting & Certification area at ElectriciansForums.net

When I did the 16th edition course many years ago I asked why so many books were needed to understand the Regs and wouldn't it have been easier to write the Regs in a simpler easily understandable way. The reply I got was that they were written so lawyers could understand them as they would be the ones prosecuting us when we got it wrong

I suppose technically, the caretaker is a skilled and instructed person and no members of staff or pupils should be hammering nails into the wall.

I think to make sure, have a word with tech support at your scheme provider.

A friend of mine got a job as caretaker/handyman at a primary school near us - we were made up as it was a steady job compared to what he'd been doing for the past 15 years.......taxi driver:D

Prior to this he was a painter and decorator.

I suppose you could say he is a 'skilled and instructed' person - not in anything that would matter in court, but still:)

This poses a question on alterations to domestic dwellings to which i thought would be a bit more stringent as under part "p" .Example installing an extra socket on a ring if exsisting cables were buried less than the required depth.Would you put the entire ring on a rcd(could make a simple job a lot of work if no spare ways.Or could you install the socket with the integral rcd built into it?????

Hi mate,

To quote 'Document P' -

"......the whole of the existing installation does not need to be upgraded to current standards, but only to the extent necessary for the new work to meet current standards....."

So, if your extra socket included new wiring that wasn't buried deeper than 50mm or mechanically protected, then your solution of an RCD socket outlet wouldn't suffice, as the cable would require RCD protection as well as the socket outlet:) - you would be looking at bringing the whole of the ring up to current standards.

This then adds the additional headache of turning it into a notifiable job:)

in the same boat i agree its a code 4 as its pre 17th i would recommend the fitment of the rcbos and give them all the relavent infomation ie instructed person route and let them decide whats best for them i would hate to fit rcbos to computers and the like and part that system runs in dado trunking but some is also burried in fabric of building so will recommend the toilets and lighting etc to be protected first dont you just hate bs 522.6.6 and 522.6.5

What a total load of nonsense!!! Makes you wonder, just how lucky all those millions of non-instructed people have been over the years, using s/outlets that had no RCD protection!!!
