Hi Guys,
I'm new on this site and have joined for some info on a problem which is driving me mad...
I have installed a 8.5kw shower, run a 11m 10mm t+e from the 40a MCB to a 45a on/off switch and then to the shower..but when i turn the shower on it trips the RCD on the splilt load CU and the MCB stays on..so i power it back on..removed the shower, checked the voltage and have 240Vac..but as soon as i turn the shower on again it trips..any ideas pls????

All sorted guys.....i switched off every MCB on the CU, then powered the shower on, it stayed on and worked, then turned each MCB on one at a time and tested the shower on each one...it didnt trip and is working perfectly fine now... but not sure on why its happened?? but as long as it works lol:D

...Re-energise shower circuit...If it still trips, then it is a wiring/earth fault...

Ahh, the good old 'BANG' test:eek: - What page in Guidance Note 3 is that, again??

The whole circuit should have been subject to a full set of tests, as well as confirmation of supply and earthing characteristics.

It's a notifiable job requiring an EIC, Schedule of Inspections and a Schedule of Test Results.

What the hell did you put on your 'Schedule of test results' - I powered the shower on and it stayed on !!!

The mind boggles:(

I was under the impression that we are obliged to do the job properly and part p was going to cut out the stagecoach merchants ;)

i need a tester and get it what!! calibrated...!!

is that thing i plug into the sockets with 3 lights not good enough?? it tells me my sockets are working ok..! im confused now..! whats an EIC and full sequence of tests!! i did some tests at school but i got kicked out for looking around the room..! Guidence note are they attached to shower??
:D:D:D

Fair comment, however, based upon what he said it was likely to be the shower which was at fault since he had 240v at shower end with the shower disconnected.

Furthermore, are you saying that when you have any CPD tripping, you are going to get your tester out and run a full battery of tests prior to turning the circuit back on?

Whilst some take a give-it-a-go approach, and others feel morally obliged to comment on the dangers and/or stupidity of dealing with a potentially fatal source of power without necessary understanding.... at the end of the day there is an intermittent undiagnosed fault on this circuit. MCBs and RCDs won't save you from every danger that faulty wiring presents. It is still possible to suffer electrocution or start fires before any protective device is tripped.

As someone else on this forum once advised, if you want to cut corners to save money, at least get yourself a smoke alarm and a decent fire extinguisher! If it were in my house I would not allow my family to use the shower until it had been competently identified and rectified.

You need to read the posts before making daft comments.

He did a full install - from the protective device to the 10mm cable to the isolator to the shower.

That requires a full set of tests - end of!!

No, but it pees me off when pratts like that come on the forum for advice about jobs that they

shouldn't even be doing.

Why shoulld I spend thousands of pounds to do things properly, when people like you are condoning the

cowboys and giving them advice.

Further more - if he'd done the full tests like he was supposed to, he would have found the fault in the

first place.

And he's still not gonna test it now the fault hasn't resurfaced - amazing - yeh, I'm a jobsworth:rolleyes:
