Hi
can anyone help.

I have just done an extension to an annexe, using 3 core 1.5mm swa for the lighting and 4 core 2.5mm for the ring into a 2 way CED Garage Consumer Unit with a 63A 30mA RCD, 32A and 6A MCBs.

Ze, Insulation resistance and continuity test came out fine testing with a Megger MFT 1553 but the RCD will only trip at 5x.

Any advice please?

I've tried all the top makes & aload of cheap ones over the years, and do you know what, the worst failure rates are .....wait for it......

CRABTREE

WYLEX

NOT chint, CED, ECD, tenby, etc etc
Anyone got any experience of fitting BG? Me and my boss were talkin about them today in the van. As for tenby....Dont know about the boards but the fronts i think are good....councils/local authorities seem to think so too..........

The only DB's we fit as a company really are mainly Wylex, and fit a good few hundred of these a week(not me personally obviously but as a whole company), i used to be the maintenance spark and it was very rare i come across a problem with them.

Ill stick with what i know, ive seen proteus boards melt and not because of a poor connection, purely mech failure

Same with tools for me, ill always buy decent gear like DeWalt/Bahco etc.. , i see people buying cheap drills/hand tools and replacing the 3 or 4 times a year because of the quality issues, one of the first things you learn as an apprentice " buy cheap = buy twice "

one of the kitchen fitters says he had a biscuit jointer by "performance pro" and reconed it was ok........ if anyone gave me that crap i`d throw it over the wall..lol.................

Always remember someone i used to work with, a strong belever in buying cheap drills, Id just bought a dewalt combi at around £300 +, i got the old " oh you dont need to spend that much on a drill etc.... "

Anyway a week later he rocked up to work monday morning proud as punch with this "NuTool" 18v drill, still had cellophane on the box " look at this, only payed £30 for it, no need to spend £300 etc... " (you know how it is)

Irony bit him right in the arse that very morning, we went to do a first fix on a kitchen, he was boxing up and attempted to drill a 6mm hole in a BREEZE BLOCK wall when smoke starts pouring from this "NuTool" piece of shat, i dont think ive ever laughed as hard as i did then since

I still own that Dewalt combi to this day, could do with a service mind, but its had 6 years of abuse and still trucking on!

Recently replaced it only because screwfix had them at a ridiculous price of £125 with the Li-Ion battery

Best hope you had it on 10mA then and not higher than 30mA, otherwise you are in trouble :)

Turns out it was set on 10mA - I feel a bit of a **** for not checking, but thanks to everyone who chipped in to help out. Also helpful re tools - I tend to go for DeWalt as well, though I got a back up drill from Ryobi which is holding out well. Has anyone geo any experience of 'Sparky' wall chasers - are the worth the money?

i've used a BG board. good value for money. only thing i didn't like was the amount of space taken up by the tails from Main sw. to RCDs. otherwise, quite impressed. RCDs behaved as they should do. even got a spirit level incorporated.
