Hello,

New guy here.

I completed C&G 2330 L2 (wanting a career change!) and would now like to progress onto PV Installation. I've spoken to Tradeskills4U as they seem to have some decent courses on offer. Does anyone recommend them? Any bad experiences?

I would like to eventually become an MCS accredited Solar PV installer. Which courses (in addition to what I have already done) would I need to complete?

From what I understand, I would need to have passed:

C&G 2399 Solar PV Course
C&G 2399-11 Solar PV Installation
C&G 2399-12 Solar PV Maintenance
C&G 2392-10 Inspection & Testing
Part P
Wiring Regs
(Then a seperate course in order to get MCS accredited)

Alternatively to the C&G courses, there are the NICEIC courses (whats the difference?)

Any help would be immensely appreciated!

Cheers,

To get MCS accreditted you don't have to do all those courses.

For your MCS accreditation you have to prove some level of competance on PV, most do that by doing one course or another.

Whilst there is C&G there is also a 'Logic' 3 day courses, that basically gives enough to show competance.

If you give your location, some people maybe able to give some specific recommendations.

The best course I have ever done was at the Centre for Alternative Technology in North Wales its over 6 days from 9am to 9pm (so full days) you stay on site in there own rooms all meals included (unfortunately no meat) but always wine on the table. The standard of tuition was absolutely incredible - My tutor was Brian Goss he has a wealth of experience and has written published books on the subject. I would steer clear of anywhere that does it over a couple of days in a rushed manner.

And no I do not work for them!

Cheers for the feedback guys

Been on the phone to Tradeskills4U and they say that if I complete Part P, 17th Edition and 2392-10 Insp & Test then I would then be in an ideal position to start the Solar PV City & Guilds Course.

I want to hopefully leave my current workplace once i've completed the Solar PV Course and get some experience before starting up on my own and getting MCS accredited.

Do not take any notice of this as it is ...............well in all honesty rubbish

Funny enough I did an Ecoskies course in Merton SE London in april 2010. To be honest it was interesting, but I felt that a lot of Part P side which as to be done was not even touched, though of course a year on it may have changed. Also there was nearly a day of the 3 day course covered by erecting rails and panels with an assement after, I suppose this is good for a sole trader who will do everything, but I wasn't interested in that and felt a lot of the electrical side was missed, as to be honest 75% is electrical. Though erection of panels should be touched I wondered if a 1/3 of the course warrented it.

I gather that the C&G course touches on the Part P aspect and concentrates a lot more on the electrical side of it, and as stated before on here, the C & G are an industry recognised standard.

I see,

It did state on the advert i looked at that it assumed you were part p qualify'd and had you 17th Edition update, so the course is aimed at sparks, mind you there was a guy on our course who wasnt a sparky either so i see the problem.

dont know the entry requirmants for the C&G course, but i assume its for sparks aswell

Malcolm are you an Electrician?

as PV is another arm for Electricians, i think all the courses are designed for people who are already Electricians. you would have to do the part P course if your just joe bloogs looking to get into PV.

Mind you the bloke who wasnt a spark in our group was not interested in the roof element or the electrical, he said they were the hardest parts about the job so he'll just sub them two elements out to others. Im a domestic spark and i must admit if this takes off for me i'd sub the electrical side out as well, its the hardest part of the install as most houses will not have the bonding in place and it can be a ball ache.

Cheers Grand
