Recently came across a 6 terminal 20Amp junction box with 12 T&E cables coming out of it and an additional chocy block inside! Is that a record? It was being used as the only distribution box for the upstairs lighting of a 3 bed semi.

I wanted to fit a 13th but the earth terminal wasn't having it!:devilish:

I am amazed it took 12

Maximum should have been 8,that is 2 cables per entry. usually mains in, mains out then a cable to light and another to the switch for the light x 3. My favourite was the B.I.C.C. 6 terminal junction box. On this one the cables came in the back, which made it easier to route the cables to their terminals.

I often use the Ashley J701 rectangular box on lighting, mounted in a cupboard on the wall for access , for all lighting on that floor level , whenever possible , you could have as many as 20 cables in them,,

I know of at least 3 council built bungalow estates (circa early/mid 70's) on Island of Thanet KENT, that used the Octopus box wiring system for both lighting and sockets. With only the cooker cable and immersion cable direct to points of utilisation... Pretty sure the Wylex CU was just a 4 way affair...

The advantages for a company that installed the Octopus boxes were that they could be off site constructed as a type of loom, taken to site and installed with ready made cable lengths

It was possible because the council houses tended to have the exact same layout from one to the next
The boxes because they were wired in a factory could be quite tidy
