Not in so many words. The wiring regs (BS7671) runs to over 400 pages. However, in most domestic installations, new cables in the wall and new sockets will both require RCD protection. Often the best way to achieve this is to add an RCD to the whole of the existing circuit. Even better may be to install a new consumer unit with RCD protection to all the circuits.

As far as the requirement for a new ring is concerned, it depends on what loads may be connected to the existing ring and what loads are proposed for the new sockets. Its possible to run a whole house on one socket ring circuit. On the other hand, you wouldn't want to find the the circuit breaker or fuse kept tripping due to overloading of the circuit.

Just out of interest, how much had they quoted for the job and how many quotes did you get?

They had quoted me £147 with me to supply them the 5 sockets

This quote was done over the phone right? Strange way of going on, i don't own my own business but surely it makes business sense to veiw any possible job first before quoting numbers from thin air?

Ben we have all said as much as we can on this i believe, i have gave you my opinion as others have.

well thats very cheap for a new ring main in my opinion, and ridiculous as it is impossible to actually quote for without seeing the Job, where are you? I'm sure there is a spark on here who can help you and it will be right.

Yes they gave me a quote over the phone, thanks for all of your help, hopefully all will go well in trying to claim my money back via small claims court as they refuse to refund my money

before going down the court route, try giving trading standards a call. a threat from them will generally bring you a quick result.

Out of interest why did you pay them. Oh and by the way install 5 new 2G sockets in a kitchen is likely to cost nearer £200 plus more if mandatory upgrades like RCD's, and equipotential bonding are required too.

round my way the normal going rate per socket outlet is at least £50. i couldn't do that for £147 !

where are they cutting corners then to get at that price ???
