Hi all
Where in the regs does it state that when modifying an existing circuit does it state that on the modified part has to comply with 17th and the existing is ok to be left as it was constructed to previous regs

Not sure where exactly is the reg, but your own work must comply with a latest regs, that’s a fact.
Unfortunately from experience I can say that it is not uncommon that your work expends further into the circuit or installation ( earthing + bonding, Zs, loading, etc.), and you end up modifying more than previously thought.

Its so important they put it right at the front of the book! Section 1 if I'm not mistaken.

You need page 4 under Introduction to BS7671:2008

It states the following:
page 4 BS7671:2008 said:
The Regulations apply to the design, erection and verification of electrical installations, also additions and alterations to existing installations. Existing installations that have been installed in accordance with earlier editions of the regulations may not comply with this edition in every respect. This does not necessarily mean that they are unsafe for continued use or require upgrading

The accepted wisdom is that if you work on a given circuit, then you should ensure that circuit, as far as is reasonable and practicable, should meet the minimum requirements of BS 7671:2008, so if you went to a house and the lighting circuit has no cpc in the cable, then you should upgrade this if you work on the circuit because otherwise your work would not be compliant, however it is for the client to pay for this works, if they refuse, then you walk away.

Or you could be like me, I walk the earth finding people who have unsatisfactory installations and put it right free of charge.

So this is you then Stuart....Super Sparky!
