To the op, have you got a late fee in your contract? If not get one and charge 5% of the total bill per day until the bill is paid.

Unfortunately, in this country, you can't impose a penalty for breach of contract and any contract that includes such a clause would be deemed unlawful. If after a job you haven't been paid or the customer just takes ages to pay, you would only be allowed to claim for reasonable losses that occured as a direct result of not being paid or being paid late, for example, interest (and of course any monies owed for the job itself). 5% above the base lending rate of the Bank of England is often used as a guideline.

Don't think I'm having a go, I promise you I'm not. Its just that if you ever had the misfortune of not being paid for a job and it ended up going to court, there's a chance you could find it quite problematic getting any monies owed at all if you were up against someone who; A) Knows exactly what they are on about when it comes to contract law and; B) Knows exactly how to pick holes in your unlawful contract.

One way to get around this however would be to change the wording from 'late fee' to 'administration fee'. This couldn't be a daily charge as you suggested but as long as you made sure that the one off admistration fee was reasonable (maybe £25 for the half hour it takes you to rearrange a few bank payments) then the threat of this may speed up a potential late payment. Remember though that what constitutes reasonable is not up to you or I to decide, ultimately it's up to the court.

Im loving the response from you guys, i was kinda half expecting it to get few replys or summat but id like to thank you all for your advice cheers guys!!!!!
