Hi All

My name is Sarah and I am a Product Design Engineering student currently completing my Masters degree. A large part of my course is a design project on which I have chosen to study the neck strain and pain suffered by those working in manual jobs, particularly through overhead work. Through the course of the next year I will design and build a new form of neck support to try and minimise the pain experienced in these specific jobs, whilst not interfering with the workers natural and required movements.

I have just joined the forum with the hope of gaining some invaluable opinions and experience from anyone here who has suffered this problem. I have created a short online survey and would really appreciate it if those who have the time could complete it and share your thoughts, hopefully one day my new product could be helping you out!

The link for the survey is:

Any information you can share would be really appreciated, thanks for the help!

I started my apprenticeship in 1961, 53 years of abusing my spine, knees, hips, hands, elbows and yes my neck is also painful a lot of my time now. Hope all you guys are making use of power tools and less arduous tasks than what we had to use. We had to contend with manual Augers, Brace & bits, Conduit bender, Threading Stocks & dies. Heavy wooden steps & ladders, etc. We had cast iron boxes to drill out not plastic knock outs, we learn`t self preservation before H & Safety entered the scene. Hope all you guys have a better painless retirement.

:wheelchair: i'd get my violin out, but it broke when i dropped my heavy wood ladders on it.

With comments like that, for sure you are a lot younger than I, when I was younger , also NOT much problem, you just got on with the job. As you mature you naturally become less supple, my point being that you will wish you had played a different tune on your Violin.

I still wish all you peeps will look after your bodies and enjoy a painless retirement.
I still think you guys generally have it easier (manually ) than we had in our day !

painless retirement.

I take it your brain isn't worn out? You have to use it to stop the effects of old age.

...Or,do what i did, find a mystical painter,in the village, and get an oil painting of yourself completed, pop it in the loft, and forget about it...last time i looked at mine, time had been cruel...:wheelchair:

Tony,i wasn't trying to be flippant,it's just i have two bones-of-contention with the premise of the lovely Sarahs' post. Firstly,we ALL know the long term effects of a lifetime of certain actions. Some are intentional, some are as a consequence of other factors, and some are chance. We can change some of these, mitigate against others, and avoid plenty more. Some of these are very prominent, voluntary actions that folk indulge in,that need no proving in the risk department. We know what these are,and that is why i have no need to list them.An overview of a study in these risks, could be summed up in a single, age old sentence,"you pays your money, you take your chance". So,submit that as your thesis...Secondly...just because your question directly relates to matters of health, does NOT mean your thesis is concerning this...my mother did her Masters in English language and literature, and told myself and my brother-in-law,that she wanted to record a conversation between us,to dissect various differences in dialects,as he is from the south coast, and i'm a Manc...this we did,and submitted it accordingly. Years later,i discover it was nothing to do with accents or dialects,it was dissecting how two males instigate and attempt to win an argument.....so beware...:bobby:
