Discuss Round boxes in the Australia area at ElectriciansForums.net

There are definitely 2 different sizes, one used for lighting accessories etc & the other usually used for fire alarm work.

The fixing screws are also different, 3.5mm on the lighting type and 4mm on the fire alarm type.

why use round at all?? you can fit a smoke to a s/g square fast fix box, only thing that would fit round would be switches, 1g switches at that, still have to use square boxes for sockets, spurs, 2g+3g switches ??

The point I was trying to make was why not round boxes made for all standard accessories instead of square, plonk one hole or 2 for doubles
cant see the prob myself, it just I get peed off with the complete blinkered attitude of manufacturers what ever happened to British ingenuity and imagination, has it been privatised too

Always thought you couldn't fit a square peg in a round hole

With regard to sockets on round boxes it would probably require a redesigned socket to work, with the trend of harmonisation and the promised Euro socket that been talked about for many many years I don't think any manufacturer would commit to this possible waste of money
