I recently asked an electrician to replace the old type fuse box with an up-to-date consumable unit and he fitted a Schneider Easy 9 unit in and to be honest it just looks cheap and nasty. My girlfriend was in the house at the time so I couldn't give my input on the unit before he fitted it.

Would it be rude of me to ask him to replace it with a different unit as at the end of the day I'm the one paying him?

Nathan

Schneider is a good make and is spec'd for all the hospitals I work on. And yes if you want it changed then you should pay to have it changed

Matey. I think its time to come clean, your posts suggest you are dabbling with sparking, so....

Schneider is anything BUT cheap and nasty, in fact i'm surprised you have been supplied with a Schneider CU and breakers by a local electrician!! Perhaps you would be much happier with a 50 quid cheapo from one of the sheds or Screwfix. I know what i would choose, every single time!!

Never heard anything so bloody ridiculous, and if you think even for a New York second, that the installing electrician is going to replace a perfectly sound CU for nothing just because you don't like the look of it, you are going to be very much mistaken. If you had an objection to the CU, you should have said something before the unit was installed, whether girlfriend is/was present or not!!

im not dabbling at all so I don't know why your suggesting that. I asked a simple question and your feedback is totally pointless to the thread.

Most electricians will use a brand known to them on the basis of being straight forward to install but also based on reliability from experience using them. Asthetics are pretty much the same for all consumer units, if i were asked after installation to replace a unit based upon looks u am afraid i would only do it at cost to the customer... certainly wouldnt do it for free.
HTH

im not expecting the electrician to replace it for free.

I've also noticed that its a Schneider box but the actual fuse switches thingies have two different brands, one of them Wiley and the other Contactum.

Is this normal to have different brands in a consumable unit?

I would recommend asking your electrician to come back and discuss your concerns with him... i prefer to use mcbs that are branded the same as consumer unit as most electricians i know do. You need to take this up with your electrician.

One look back through your posts suggests quite to the contrary!

My point in this thread is that as a DIYer we should be saying getting a spark in.

Not on a new installation it's not, so no it's not normal!!

as above. schneider CU, schneider breakers. end of. any problems in the future with that CU and schneider could wriggle out of warranty claims.

The only thread I can think of where I had a problem was when a so-called sparky said there wasn't an earth in one of the sockets.

I'm not a sparky and I came on here to ask for advice and if your not going to contribute by answering my questions then I'd rather you not post at all and keep your views to yourself.

I won't as long as you keep up this pretence of:

Now tell me that you aren't using this site to do this yourself.

I have no idea what your on about to be honest and your contribution to this thread is pointless so please go.
