The chemicals causing it were gradually phased out globally, but it still persists apparently
It is covered in a reasonably readable manner here:

I actually dealt with Dr. Jonathan Shanklin in relation to that area, we built a system for them to gather metrological satellite data from their Rothera base in 1992 as part of this atmospheric science project. After a couple of years it had confirmed the lower resolution data (global data dumps available an hour or so after fly-over) and agreed with their ground-based measurements using a Dobson spectrophotometer. Soon it became useful for them for operational reasons giving weath forecast data for the airstrip and field parties and it is still in operation 30 years on.

Prior to my time, the now-closed group I worked with had taken data from the Nimbus-7 satellite, it had been seen giving stupid results over Antarctica that nobody believed but once the ozone hold had been found the data anomaly made sense.

TL;DR The fairly universal ban on CFCs has greatly reduced the loss and it has been returning.

Do you think there will ever be micro-nuclear plants for individual houses? You just pick up the fuel from specialist shops like you would propane gas cylinders...

There is no way rural Scotland can cope with every new home all electric... The infrastructure isnt there.... even if they do put PV on the roofs.

My particular village, its only our relatively new houses (15 yo) that have mains gas.... The rest are mixed between all electric, propane cylinder, bulk propane or bulk oil tank.

Most farmhouses are oil, with dodgy provision for tractor driven generator and a widowmaker lead.... (ok... not every farmhouse... but i have come across one in my life)

I won't pretend I understand it all, but it sounds very cool! And an interesting article too 👍

We have two things in abundance in Scotland, Wind and rain.

If only there was a way to generate power from the wind and water we have.

Maybe even come up with some kind of system where the excess generated by wind could be used to move water about that could then be used to generate power on both of our still days per year. :D

Could it be done? Yes.
Would it ever be safe and cost-effective? No.

I dunno..... We could get Lucien to have a look...😆

I like how 'we' are the problem with global warming.... 'We' have to go electric cars.... 'We' have to sort our recycling..... 'We' have to go vegan.... All to save the planet.......

In the next advert, they tell us to go on holiday on an aeroplane..... Marvel the entrepreneurs sending celebrities and into space......
Applaud the over budget, over time travel infrastructure projects and not think about how much concrete and steel had to be processed to build the damn thing that, in the case of many of them, only any use to a fraction of the population.

Build more hospitals.
Build more reservoirs.
Build flood protection that will actually work.

Nations and society could be much better lead and managed, but democracies get jokers and fools in charge as they promise the electorate what they want to hear and have no intention or ability to deliver it. And dictatorships get much the same but with added secrete police.

Ultimately the problems are all down to energy. If you had vast supplies of clean energy then all of the things we want/need could be delivered without too much damage to the environment, but the industrial revolution and modern life has largelt been funded by cashing in on 100 million years of stored up carbon.

Why do you think it's a scam @SparkyChick ? I'm not saying you're take on the science is right or wrong - I'm not qualified to do so - but if it's deliberate, long term deceit (I think it was still the 80's when I first heard about it), who gains from it?

Why do I think it's a scam?

Mostly because public consideration of alternative views is simply not allowed. If you don't parrot the accepted lines you're a denier and people will attempt to discredit or silence you. There is compelling evidence that what we are experiencing is largely due to the natural cycles of the planet... I don't deny we've had an impact, to do so would be foolish at best, but I don't believe the situation is as terminal as it's being painted to be.

For the majority of people, it needs to be seen as an imminent major catastrophe. Anything else and they won't accept the changes that are being foisted on us. As @UNG says, this is another means of controlling us. We've just demonstrated how much we're willing to accept if it's for the greater good over the last couple of years and it's scary how readily people simply stopped doing many of the things we take for granted.

There's a whole bunch of stuff that I'm not going to talk about publicly because to be fair a lot of it makes you sound like a crazy when you say it. I'll probably post in The Arms with a few of the things I'm trying to keep track of.

Who gains?

Financiers and people selling products and services that are seen as climate friendly. Certainly not us, the everyday prole on the street... we stand to loose everything.

This 100% . Most accept the "narrative" dished out .

An unfortunate situation with many issues in this day and age. There is no middle ground and you're either right or a conspiracy theorist. I'm not sure when it became unacceptable to ask reasonable questions, but in the past it was very much encouraged of people to question that which they did not fully understand.

Same as those that claim 99% of GP's have no more of a clue about covid than clever people who spent hours and hours researching it over the last 2 years

My feeling is that this change has been a long time coming and it is part of the problem with much of what is wrong with society today. We can no longer engage in reasonable discussion around sensitive topics because as you say, you're either right or you're a racist, xenophobe, sexist, misogynist, conspiracy theorist etc. etc. etc.

I chat a lot with clients and a couple them who have kids have expressed dismay and great concern that their children are no longer open to discussion about certain topics... topics where the kids understanding is significantly skewed towards the narratives presented in the main stream media. When alternative view points are put to them, they are rejected out of hand and the conversation ends. They are, for the most part, totally closed boxes, who's entire outlook on politics and society has been established. They aren't being taught how to think... they are being taught what to think and that is the possibly the biggest issue we face, that and the division that identity politics is causing.
