over heard a conversation about keeping access control cables away from mains cables. whats the deal with that? not got regs on me?

yea eddy currents but is it really going to affect switching of 12v DC?? can understand if its on IT cables??

Electrical separation is for all cables not just data. You said this is on an access control cable so contaminating its control won't make for good access control.

has it ever been proven that separation is needed?? endless times i have put my head above ceilings to find main cables, cat 5, bt, coax etc all wrapped around each other like a bowl of spagetti!! never a problem. I wouldnt install cables like that though :/ (just to clear that up)!!!

thats what i was thinking! again i wouldn't do it, just wanted some more info on the subject. not got regs to hand but saw a section on EMI disturbance.

separating data and phone cables from cowboy fitters who just throw them into ceilings is what iv'e been sorting for weeks in loads of shops. It gives all sorts of problems on the networks and can damage some phone systems and cost loads to replace network cards.

We earth water pipes so a voltage does not appear on them running in a property with mains voltage, If it is not earthed you may see a voltage of 100-200 volts appear on it. So pump 200 volts into equipment designed to run at 12 volts and it won't like it.​

Never had a problem with data and signal cables run alongside mains. (Except for the Muppets running both types of cables).

I had a great one this week, a shop had a refit and i had call as none of the tills or card machines would work. shopfitters had done a great job of looming all the cables round the ceiling but had loomed with them all the data and phones. Had to work through the night to rewire all of them in a safer zone to get it up and running again. they earned me a nice wedge and lost themselves any future work from the company, thanks guys if your on here.
