A friend of mine recently had her house modernised by a government grant to bring her house up to a quality standard.

The electrical work is very shoddy, trunking has been used instead of lifting the floorboards above the light fitting. Does she have grounds for complaint for shoddy workmanship and does it comply with the electrical regulations?

actually, it's works to be about £2400 per house

No excuse then. Get it reported and see the outcome.
I'd like to see the contracts involved (if it's contractors that is). If it's direct works by the authority it's still not up to standard.
Seen it before, they'll get away with what they can. Some tenants take pride in their houses, others don't. Many are taken for a ride, don't want to cause trouble or couldn't care less. If points aren't made, it just continues.

Jazz - where in wales is it?, if its along the North Wales coast then I can understand where your coming from as I know lads who work for both big firms who do the council rewires(trucked ), and I can confirm the work is usually very poor, sometimes non compliant, old cable used and they don't own a tester!

no.

The work was carried out under the new Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS) grant from the welsh assembly which was a £220 million for this housing area. If they consider this work is up to their Quality Standard .. god help us!

actually, it's works to be about £2400 per house

That's not just for rewiring houses though, is it?

As the WHQS also includes heating, fuel efficiency, insulation, new kitchens, new bathrooms, safety, security, disabled access and attractive environments as well as ensuring the property is in a good state of repair, I would imagine that £2400 per house won't go very far, especially if there is lots of older housing stock.

Also, if they enforce the "attractive environments" part of the WHQS, then moving everyone out of Wales is also going to cost more than the entire improvement budget................................................................Only joking!!!!!!!!
