shower and lights tripping

steve.t.

can any one help please, i'm very new to testing. got called to a house were they had a shower upgraded from a 7.5kw to an 8.5 but didn't upgrade the mcb. the shower is tripping also the light's are blowing, up to 4 in a day. I aim to go and put a 40amp mcb on but are these problems connected. oh and the shower cable is 10mm.

not sure if its relevant but i had a situation where the sockets were wired in 1mm t&e and on a 6 amp breaker (lights), when the hoover was plugged in the mcb would trip as it should, but also at the same time a bulb would blow.

just out of curiosity what is access training?,30amp mcb, where in relation to the rest of the circuits is the shower circuit breaker/rcd protection?,they replaced the shower, was the other faulty or was it possibly the wiring, these are the general things that you will need to check out when carring out testing, fault finding,i am sitting here just assuming what might be at fault,i might be thinking for instance that was a fault on a switch and they have just replaced the shower instead,i went to a shower fault yesterday, first thing i done was check the wiring and pullcord switch, all ok,check the shower next, shower at fault, new shower required,do you have a megger/fluke tester

megger 1552, i will do the shower and if the lights are still blowing i will run a full test and check for loose connections, they just upgraded it the last one wasn't tripping. it's main switch, rcd, shower then sockets both on 30 amp mcb
access training is a company that sells courses in all types of building trades

exactly, methodical thinking is how it all works in this trade, your still learning, but remember safe isolation, approved practises etc, guidance note 3,ewr 1989,it takes years to become a qualified and competent, knowledgable electrician,im not sure what qualification you got from that access course but maybe think of doing the city & guilds 2392 course on testing,it should give you a bit more confidence in your skills,if your not feeling confident in what your doing dont risk anything, get some help from your mentor.

what is the BS number on the mcb?,out of interest how long do these access courses last, how much?reason i ask is my brother who wants a change of career suddenly has taken an interest in the trade, asked me how long is the training i said three years college, his reply no,so maybe the access route then he does apprenticeship with me.

cant remember the bs number, 4 weeks and about 2 to 3k, intensive course. i recomend it, but i'm aware i can only take on small jobs and still have years of learning ahead, dont call myself a sparky but a practising sparky.

i will be having a go at the 2391 in about 6 months after i've gained a little experience,

You would probably be better imo of going for the 2392 as the 2391 is very hard, not saying that you couldnt do it but its designed for very experienced people, with many years in the trade, the 2392 would suit your needs better at the moment and you could upgrade to the 2391 after a few years, have a look at the 2391 questions on the forum see if you can do them,if you can then fair play and good luck, let us know how you get on with the shower and lighting
