Hello, the ceiling pull cord switch for my shower has broken and a replacement is on its way. However in the meantime I am just going to create a temporary switch till the replacement has been fitted.

Here are pictures of the switch internals:

As you can see, there are 6 wires, my question is - which 2 wires does the switch connect in order to send power to the shower? As I said, I am going to create a temporary switch by connecting these 2 wires until the replacement switch unit has been fitted.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks!

That switch is 2 pole so it switches both the live and the neutral. I assume you're not a sparky so my advice is don't mess with this, that wiring already looks very suspect and bathrooms are places that require special considerations electrically so please get a sparky in to replace it for you.

If you do get someone in, try and get them to replace it with a Crabtree 50A pull switch as the design of them is much better and you don't have to strain cables as they are terminated in the base.

I suspect by your pic that there is heat damaged cables and insulation so as above get this done and checked by a competent Electrician your families safety is always worth more than a callout fee your trying to avoid. The cabling may need to be repaired too if not replaced it will need checking with test equipment.

We have a few members around Leeds ..what area are you from?

Get a Sparky in to do the repairs, the cables look damaged, as others have said may need replacing

Don't worry there is an electrician coming on Friday to fit a new switch however I was just hoping there would be a way in which I could create a temporary connection in order to be able to use the shower once or twice whilst I'm waiting for the repair (I don't have a bath so things could get very smelly haha).

Would anyone be able to tell me if this would be possible and what would need to be connected to send power to the shower unit?

Thank you

rather be smelly than dead, mate. that looks that bad, i'd leave well alone and the fuse/MCB that feeds it out /off. DO NOT USE. DO NOT ATTEMPT REPAIR.DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT COLLECT LIFE INSURANCE.

No one on here with any sense will tell you how to bodge a quick repair, we are professionals and our advice is the same as already expressed .. use a sink and sponge for a few days , its not ideal but you'll be safe!

Yeah, I doubt anyone who's even partly electrically competent is going to give you any kind of instructions or other encouragement to do a DIY job on this. The wiring really does look badly deteriorated so to mess with it really isn't safe, even if you have no shower for a few days rather wait for your sparky.
