done well in aberdeen bit of an understatement and what small club did Clough take to the very top

he can retire knowing he has retired as probably the sixth best manager in english football history behind true greats like shankly don revie herbert chapman and obviously the greatest of all brian clough to name four.winning things at a big club big deal, making a great club is something else fergie was like paisley took a big club and made it bigger.so no fan fare from me.done well at aberdeen though more of an achievement.winning in europe.

Now, that is complete nonsense i have to say and i'm not even a United fan - i'm far from it.

Liverpool were the all conquering side when Ferguson took over, he has churned out team after team after team - for little money at first, and then granted he did spend some mega'bucks on a few players over the past decade.

Manchester United hadn't won the league for 25years before Ferguson finally won it in 92/93.
Manchester United hadn't won the European Cup for 30years before Ferguson finally won it in 98/99.
Manchester United had only won a handful of FA cups between Busby and Ferguson finally winning it.

You can't say Manchester United were a big club when Ferguson took over, they were a club that was gradually going downhill...Ferguson steadied the ship and turned them into the most dominant force British football has ever scene.

To say Don Revie is better than Ferguson slightly questions your knowledge of the game...he won a handful of titles and a FA cup compared to fergusons 38trophies with Manchester United and several more at Aberdeen. Same goes for Shankley, probably 5 credible trophies with Liverpool ?

I find it hard to believe how people can say Ferguson isn't the best, or a close second...even if you hate him, you can't do anything but admire his CV and achievements.

I don't think you'll find many missing the departure of Ferguson!! Good riddance, how anyone can call him a sportsman i don't know, one of the worst.sorest losers in Soccer. He isn't gone anyway, he will still be pulling strings from upstairs, that's the type of guy he is, more of an out and out manipulator rather than a manager!! Don't forget most of the years MU were at the top, they had more money to spend on players than anyone else in the premier league, and poached many a good player from the other clubs!!

Now Beckham retiring, that's what I would say is a bigger lose to football than SAF going. IMO he promoted all that is good about football, sportsmanship, passion, desire and loyalty, but with all that still keeping your feet on the ground. The only reason Man Utd sold him was because he became to big for SAF to handle.
Some good managers have been pointed out above, SAF certainly does have to be on the list but along side Shankly, Paisley, Clough and propably Wenger. These managers all turned the clubs around and into dominating teams for their era. Who will be the next SAF, Moyes? IMO no, he will acheive things but mainly because it would be harder to fail at Utd than succeed, the team and money are all in place already. I know I'm biased but I feel Rodgers will be the next big manager in the English game, he shows the right attitude and determination to succeed, he wants his team to play fast passing football, when played well is unstoppable, LFC have shown this though-out the season, consistency is the key and there shortfall at the moment, once that is there LFC will be back towards the top of the purch.
