Complete lack of work everywhere at the moment. Firms are struggling and the likes of myself being self employed things are very very bleak. The firms that are hiring try to take the **** with the wages ie

Job Details

Thats a real **** take
how can anyone pay that kind of money
.
.
Dont know what to say,,,,,theres so much i would like to say but I'd be banned from here.
I hope they get what they deserve with that wage, a monkey, cos they're paying peanuts

I was working for that sort of money 25 yrs ago didnt think it was that brilliant then had to do overtime etc to make it up and whats the bit about being NICEIC registered might as well sign on as work for that

Is this normal or is this a one-off? Why are things so bad in NI? I was contracted to work in Dublin for a while about ten years ago....yeah, I know it's not Northern Ireland and at that time the place was booming. I assume NI was the same at that time. They were crying out for skilled people with the amount of work that was up for grabs. They constantly talked of the roar of the Celtic tiger with house prices going sky high and salaries following not far behind. I assume things have changed for the worse since then.

I live in the South of Ireland, and yes Marvo, things are very bleak here. Not sure what the rate being paid by contractors to sparks is at the moment, but its defo not as bad as in that advert. Very many of the (younger) sparks in my area have moved away to London and Holland. I know that advert was a sterling rate, but still, when converted to euro, its still only around €7 per hour.
The return of slave labour?

It's not the minimum wage itself that's worrying, it's the fact that a qualified guy with his own transport is getting offered no more than the minimum. It's saying that the qualifications and experience don't give the guy any more value in the workplace than a floor sweeper, shelf stacker or petrol pump attendant.

It is the lowest I have seen. My old company made us all redundant then took people back at ÂŁ9 an hour. I wish I had have took it though as I am struggling with self employment.

ÂŁ5.93 is the minimum wage here. Add on own transport and NICEIC fees and it would be impossible to live with that wage.

When I was working in Dublin 5 years ago I was on ÂŁ16 an hour/60 hour weeks with all expenses paid Monday to Friday. Even cigs were paid for lol.

Any of the Northern Irish lads know if any of the agencys are any use? Might go and join a few of them.

It would be interesting to know the number of registered electricians in NI and see what this is as a % of the population, and to compare with regions in other parts of the UK. The competent persons website could be used to do this I suppose.

I dont think there is any of these "quick training centres" that are pouring out the "sparks" in two weeks that there is in the mainland UK, so I think we have been saved a bit from that saturating the place. However the building game is over and there is a complete lack of new projects due to funding. I know a hell of alot of sparks that are driving taxis, working in call centres and security etc.

Things aren't much better in the South mate. I looked for a job in a new nursing home in my home town and a qualified electrician can expect to take home 350 euro a week.( so much for the TEEU and union rates) The job is full of young fellas living at home with their mammies. That wouldn't hardly pay my mortgage as unfortunately I bought my house in the so called Celtic Tiger years. I've heard of sparks in Enniskillen hospital getting ÂŁ8 an hour. This wee island of ours is banjaxed caused by greedy bankers and corrupt politicians.
