Silly man should have vented it first and used his gas sniffer to make sure it was clear before going down there.
It's a bit like the sparks safe isolation thing.

who am i? someone what knows more than me about heating systems. LOL. got it sussed with your help, much appreciated. it had the blumber/heating bloke foxed. he had wired stat L and S/L reversed and was missing a S/L to the valve. also poor info supplied with stat sensor.
not a sketch, mate. it's indelibly imprinted in my brain. now i see how logical it is, i feel more confident with fault finding . as they say. every day's a school day.
