I have a small business beside my house which has power going underground from the house to the premises. Today, some lights, cooker etc went off but other appliances stayed on. There is a fuse box in both premises but no switches have tripped on either of them. Help!

yes you can, but if it won't hold in, then you have a fault . if that is the case, eliminate the appliances by unplugging them all then plug in 1 at a time. if the fault is still there with all appliances unplugged, you need an electrician to trace the wiring fault.
Have done what you said plugging them in one by one and all were ok until I switched on the outside light which doesn't have a bulb.

the fact that it ain't got as bulb is irrelevant. it's probably got water inside it. that will cause enough of a leakage to trip a RCD. with the circuit isolated, open the light up and have a look. water, cables shorting out, one or two possibles.

Ok, thanks for that, will have a look tomorrow, it's blowing a howler here today so will have a look tomorrow.

The love these call outs.. Are all your breakers on.. Yes, Both Rcd's ? What are Rcd's mmm Yes they must be as all the breakers are on.. And you are missing power to part of your system. Yes.. Are you sure everything is on?? Yes everything is on..

Turn up and the rcd is off.. Did you turn anything on when it happened.. No.. are you sure ???

Turn RCD on and it holds. notice there's a lamp off that didn't used to be.. Rrrrrr penny drops i turned that on and then the power went off... right that's a call out free and the price of a new lamp..

But on the plus side one happy customer....

eh?...callout free or callout fee?....come on Dave...wants to be the latter don`t it....even if its just 20 quid....

Well thats nice to know! I like the fact you keep your health and safety head on - i hope you do the complete safe isolation procedure and not just swipe the breaker off :)

although to be fair, even though we're not supposed to admit it - we all know we work live quite alot of the time because we cba to isolate if its something minor like changing a lighting face plate.

We looooove the danger!
