SON Floodlight advice please.

Unbeliveably I have never come across a dead son floodlight, have a client who has about 6 which are not working, not sure what power the lamps are yet yet as it was too wet today to get the ladder off the van!;-) Thinking ahead in peoples experience is it worth changing the bulbs for an LED equivalent, replacing the whole enclosure with an LED unit or just replace the bulbs?

All you can do is 1, change the lamp. If that’s not it, (and you’re getting power to the fitting) then 2, the gear is shot.

If fairly new fittings, you might be able to purchase spares

Changing to LED is one way forward. Just remove the faulty tray and connect L and N to the lamp holder.

If changing lamp from HPS to LED you will need to either replace the ballast for a driver or (if the lamps have driver built in) bypass the old ballast.

By time you've got ladders up checked if its lamp or ballast you may aswell of replaced the fitting with led matey.

Either a whole fitting or a led lamp is now available with the control gear bypassed.

Could be son-t or son-e. Probably t and could be any wattage from 50 to 400. Try replacing lamp and if gear has failed bypass a d fit equivalent output led lamp.

I think that even changing the bulbs is a bit of a fools errand, personally think they should be replacing with LED floods.

SONs are great, nice soft warm orange glow. Have relamped plenty over the past year. I love discharge lighting! ❤ LED floods are so boring.

I replaced a couple of 50 or 70W metal halide units the other day with LED.
Told customer that by the time I'd gone to site, climbed ladder to chek lamp type, gone to wholesalers and got replacements it would cost more than two LED floods.

Good point, this was one of my concerns with going towards LED's these lights are on an old property and if I replace like for like at least they know what they are getting, if the colour temp is wrong on an LED flood it could change the feel of the grounds/gardens. The downside is if I change the lamps as Timbo has said above it will probably be a lot more expensive!?

Rolyberkin I have a similar situation with an old 400 watt high pressure sodium bulb and it’s about 30 years old. I decided just to buy a new 1000 watt LED instead of working and spending money to change it over to LED. the ballast would have to be changed plus the build base. Not worth it just buy new lights

1000W is quite a step up from 400! Is it that much brighter, or just more power hungry?

I doubt it is a 1000W LED they are normally much lower in watts probably mean equivalent to. I personally recommend changing all fittings to LED regardless if lamp has blown or anything just better in long run to convert now

I have one close neighbor who lives about 1000 yards away and about an acre of field and the perimeter of my house. We have had some undesirable people probably druggers and they better not start coming on my property. 400 watt done real good with the light was amber and lit this field up, since it’s so old and I have it on top of a 30 foot pole and can’t get to it good enough to work on it. I’m 62 with heart disease and I’m going to lower it so I can work on it and change over to 240 vac instead. As they say the higher the voltage the lower the amperage

Use warm white LEDs. They don't look out of place, rather like the old halogen floods.
