Hello all,

I am 35 years old and have 7 years of work experience as an Electrician in the past. I need to gain a UK qualification because my qualifications are not recognised in the UK.I have been looking for an employer in the Edinburgh area, to start as an adult trainee electrician, for almost one year. I did contact alot of companies online, by post and telephone, without any positive response.
I sat the Electrical IndustryPre-employment Assessment and achieved the required standard.
and I am already on SECTT's list of people looking for employers.
Could anyone give me help and advice please?

Best wishes,

I am originally from Iraq and now living happily in Scotland

Hi mate, I'm not 100% sure bout Scotland but here in England the 17th Edition would be a good start. Then maybe progress onto the 2391.

What sort of work are you looking for? Domestic, commercial or industrial?

Re: struggling to find an Employer in Edinburgh to start as an adult trainee electric

Hi, my past work was all domestic but I am very flexible and don't mind commercial or industrial.

Domestic work ok. Get the 17th Edition Wiring regulations and then 2391 Inspection & testing qualifications and you're good to go!

Here ares some links to those courses.... Requirement for Electrical Installations (BS7671) IEE Regulations (17th Edition): Stevenson College Edinburgh

City & Guilds 2391-10 Inspection and Testing course | Technique Training

Re: struggling to find an Employer in Edinburgh to start as an adult trainee electric

I think those courses are for qualified electricians only, I am not qualified because as I mentioned my qualifications are not recognised in the UK, so I have to start from the first step.

The 17th edition can be taken by anyone! The 2391 can be taken on completion of the 17th edition!

Re: struggling to find an Employer in Edinburgh to start as an adult trainee electric

By taking the 17th edition and 2391 will I be qualified as an electrician and be able to work as an electrician?

Re: struggling to find an Employer in Edinburgh to start as an adult trainee electric

Debatable, as i'm sure you'll find out. It all depends what type of work you want to carry out...

Re: struggling to find an Employer in Edinburgh to start as an adult trainee electric

Eh no ..

Scotlands a wee bit different to sooth o the rio tweed.

the trade bodies up here only recognise those who have served a full apprenticeship or have completed the adult training route as organised by sectt,,

BUT as you are discovering the catch 22 is finding an employer who i will take you on ..

IF theres someone looking for a man in my next of the woods feel free to drop me a line as well :)

Whilst the law says competenet person and there is no stat licence arrangements this situation of debate will contune until some-one gets there finger oot and fixes it ...
The case for a sparks licence to cover the four home countries is almost absolute to my mind ..
ie no licence no dabbling ...

North of the border we seem to be a lot stricter than south with the part p situation etc .

A little knoledge can be a very dangerous thing ...

mr elecrtricalserv i am not to sure what you last post means ,i take it to mean that you agree with what i have just attempted to post above if not i do apologiise

Was a reply @ Dean. He said it is debatable if you can trade as an electrician with just the 17th & 2391. Its not debatable, here in England & Wales its a fact!

So your telling me that two courses which it it possible to do both within a week you can set yourself up as a spark ,,,,,scary ..

Is that really an acceptable situation?
