I am starting to struggle with keeping up with the Jobs. And I'm scared I will not finish them and fail the course. I feel comfortable with the theory but a little nervous about the practical side at the moment and I'm actually loosing sleep over this.

Any tips for me? :(

Thanks.

if the tutors don`t help (which they more than likely will) speak to someone at student services mate. there is loads of help out there in college. also what area are you in? i might know someone depending where you are that you could tag along with

What??? If all you've got to stress about is the practical mate, then you are laughing. Most of us would of been the other way around. Practical takes time on the tools to become comfortable with.

im on 2nd year 2330- and im 26, 17 year olds faster than me, but what i have to do is just ask questions galore and watch others. most work in the trade that is why

The problem isn't about asking questions, the OP says he is good at theory just not as fast as others in the workshop and this is getting to be a real problem so a little help is whats needed from us.... Take the great advice (some of these guys teach this + higher studies) from some of the posts on here about getting a board set up at home, talking to your tutors after all they don't want to see you fail, and you won't. I won't give advice that's already been given. What I will say is the practical exam is 10 hours (i think) and the first problem you will come across is the swa from the incomer to the c/u, getting the length cut to size is really difficult for first timers. There is a height demand on the c/u but not the incomer box! Cut your swa as close has you can, connect it to the c/u first then take off the incomer box and position it to suit your swa. Cheating? No, its not against the exam rules but do it quickly. This will save you loads of time that you may need later.... BTW I passed the exam with enough time spare to give advice to my pals and did not have a single mark taken off, a perfect score. I won a few beers that day from my college mates as we had a side bet.

I'm one of the furthest behind in the group and I have a red sticker next to my name which means I will fail the course if I carry on completing jobs as slow as I am.

I honestly feel for you and though you have had great advice and support on here I think perhaps another fresh outlook my be called for.

Nothing is worth the stress your obviously going through. I had an apprentice 20 odd years ago that literally had two left hands, I'm left handed so perhaps not a good analogy, but he was not good on the tools. However hard he tried he was not cut out to be that way and in the end they took him off the tools and put him in ther stores/office. He now runs his own Electrcial Consultancy as a Certified Engineer.

There is an old adage Those who can do, those who can't teach and it is quite true. not everyone is a ragged a##e sparks, as not every sparks will be an engineer. Some can do both and are lucky.

As you say your comfortable on the theory, then why not concentrate on that. See what is available at college on the engineering side and see if you want to do that. If you do have a talent for the theory side, don't waste your talent trying to be something you may not be. Mark Twain noted that youth is wasted on the young, but make the most of yours. It would not do any harm to step back, chat with your student advisor and see if there may be naother path for you.

Whatever you choose best of luck son and hey what is the worse that can happen....... you may become a sparks.

I'm exactly the same, I'm doing the same course, I feel confident with the theory side of it but not the practical. Is there a good book anywhere that explains the basic wiring diagrams in simple steps? Also, someone mentioned earlier that practising at home would be a good idea, what exactly would be the best stuff to buy to practice and what are some useful tasks to practice. I've only been on this course for 4 months, so am not clued up at all, just want to try to catch up with the rest of the class.

Would it be a good idea to contact some local electrical companies around my area, and ask if they would be willing to take me on as free labour on the weekends/evenings?

I would have a bit a practice on your own first as already suggested then go for giving someone a hand. Would have thought that the lecturer would have offered you all the advice that you have been given already i certainly would like my students if i had any to feel like they could disguss their problems with me.

The thing that students usually struggle with by the end of the first year is the testing - if you are serious then i would recommend that you get yourself a continuity and insulation resistance tester you can then practice at home. Something like THIS would be ideal and you wouldn't lose out as you could sell it for what you pay for it if you ever want to get rid. (honest its not mine lol) guessing it might go for around ÂŁ80

If you do get one just make sure you know safe isolation first ;)
