Hi. This may sound stupid, but when doing a sub main in the same building can you use one of the cores as an earth.(say 16mm 3core swa) or have to run a separate one? and the best way to terminate? ones before have be out houses had to put an earth rod in.
 
Yes you can use the 3rd extra core as the earth yes!! (use the black as earth and sheath correctly)
termination is only via a SWA gland / piranha nut.... all other ways including using BS951 clamps / Jubilee clips as seen in some recent posts are NOT allowed.
 
thankyou for reply. did think was fine. termination i ment do i use a metal consumer unit or terminate swa into box then tails + earth to consumer unit? which is most cost effective do u think?
 
Personally, ....i would always use a metal CU in a commercial installation, i've always considered your typical Plastic CUs as Domestic quality!!

is that for when the MD is thrashing about with his secretary in the switch room?
