16mm SWA is feeding it so that should be enough. the thing is im not strictly an electrician, i work on a farm but i have been training over the past 2-3 years as a sparks. I do what my employers ask and sometimes make suggestions but they dont pay me enough to do proper calculations!

This is scary!

Are you seriously saying that you just install with no calcs or checks.

What about testing & inspection?

I am wondering how you will manage with the earth rod connected to the pump when the earthing system for the supply is of a different nature.

If this is in a business situation you do realise what you are doing could get you, personally, a criminal record don't you?

I'm not paid to be a design engineer, but for my own peace of mind and self-respect for my chosen profession, I do my calcs!

But if you just want to play at it... carry on. This game doesn't end with 'taking your ball home' but fatality!

Do it right first time.

Sponge: If they're not paying you enough to do the proper calcs then they're not paying you enough to do the Job. At the end of the day if anything goes wrong & there's a problem, Guess where the Buck stops ?: With you, & your bosses won't take the blame.
As Silva.Foxx said this is'nt a game & your risking peoples Lives & Property.

400 metres of 16mm SWA cable, ....has this been supplied in a single length or is there any joints in this run?? I take it that this cable has been direct buried, so how did you pull this cable in for that 400 metre run?? I hope and pray you didn't use a tractor off the farm, cause if you did, the chances are, it's not a 16mm cable anymore. The other thing of course, ...is what sort of condition is that cable sheath in, even before any back filling with the excavated soil, that i'm going to put money on, hasn't been de-stoned or sifted!!!

I'm not going to mention the calc's for this cable, as others here, have covered that side of things.
I'd still be concerned about the starting current volt drop on this motor though, after 400 metres

silly me. looked today and there is an earthing nut. seems a bit stupid to me that theres nothing in the manual about it. you would think that the pump would have some sort of multicore cable with the 3 phases + an earth. I suppose i'd better put a new earth rod in at the control box because its about 400M away from the dis board!

Are you sure it is an earthing nut and not a nut so you can attach a stainless steel cable or similar for lowering and raising it from the liquid you are pumping it from rather than using the motor cable?

I’ve heard some good ones in my time, but “they don’t pay me enough to do proper calculations” takes the biscuit. You say you work on a farm and then come out with I’ve been training as a sparks for 2 – 3 years.

Sponge is the right name for you, it’s probably what’s keeping your ears apart.

This has to be a wind up!

look guys, i probably sounded a bit flippant before..in fact very. Since I have worked there I have tried to raise the standards to 17th. If I didnt care I wouldn't be on this forum in the first place. The irrigation company supplying the pump did the calculations as i have been working on other projects.

400m was probably an exaggeration, we put in the first 180m by hand then the groundworks contractors put in the rest (must be at least 100m). im not sure how they did it, but there are some signs or some struggling!
