Discuss Supplemntary Bonding (lack Of) What Code? in the Periodic Inspection Reporting & Certification area at ElectriciansForums.net

When you carry out an eicr, you are not applying the regulations. You are reporting on the condition of the installation against current regulations.

I think PC Electrics answered your question in post 9? As has been said just because it applied to earlier Regs it doesn't mean it does now and as such you have to code it thus?

If a installation was done after 2008 ie 17th edition rcd protection 10mm to water and gas 16mm main earth then no bonding is required am I right prior to 2008 bonding supplementary bonding is required and any installations that don't comply you code and report appropriately

...Hello ..... not necessarily. There is always a chance that supplementary bonding may still be required!

It depends on the particular situation you are presented with.

I've had too many stellas to be coherent so someone else can explain why you might still need supp bonding

....Don't get too hung up on forms.

You could list the same information you put on a minor works certificate on a headed A4 sheet of paper, do you think then that it is somehow breaking a rule... no, it's just a another pro forma with the same information on.

Same for a PIR / EICR, I agree, nice to use the "right" one, but in theory, you could write all the same information on a sheet of paper and it would still be a valid "opinion at a point in time". Its down to the information and the skill and judgement of the person who wrote it. The format is (almost) irrelevant.

The answer I was given (by a college tutor) was that if an installation pre-dates equipotential bonding it probably also pre-dates PVC cable so is more than likely wired in VIR or lead sheathed cable and should therefore be rewired.

I queried that as well - apparently VIR is considered unreliable so should be taken out of service regardless of the apparent condition.

Cool, man. I was being a bit devils advocate. I think even if the unlikely event occurred, I'd still suggest its time to move on too.

TBH I was thinking along the same lines - it sounds a bit of a cop out answer, like if for instance everything had been taken care of and been wired in MICC which is supposed to last for ever.

I can't imagine there are many MI installations which predate equipotential bonding that have been impeccably maintained yet remain unchanged, but there are usually a few exceptions to the rule.
