Is it normal for a supply meter (not generation meter) to run backwards when you're generating more than you're consuming?

Its not that common but a few of the older ones do, including our own and 2 or 3 of our customers. Usually DNO/supplier come out and change them but ours has been running backwards for 18 months and it makes a for a nice added bonus - as a result of this, according to our meter readings and subsequent bill we used 2 units of electricity between April and June last year!

Just inform the supply company by letter once and hope they do nothing about it, as long as you have proof of communication then you are covered.

Thanks. I don't remember seeing a tick box on the FiT application though I've not filled it in fully yet so may have missed it. Will check it over properly.

The G83 notification will inform the DNO that there is microgeneration on site. It is then up to them and the electricity supplier to ponder if this means that a meter needs to be changed. Some FiT application forms now ask this question of the householder.

Yes TedM me old china some FIT forms do ask and some dont.

But as far as i am aware its the installers responsibility to make the customer aware that they could be accused of fraud with either an analogue meter (that goes backwards as some dont) or a digital meter that shows RED (reverse energy detection) when the PV system is energised. They obviously can prove that they have a Pv system but it could save some grief later on.

However, if Dansk and your good self are correct and once the DNO receive the G83 it is their responsibility to make any changes to the customers supply meter then thats a weight off my mind....................... not alot of weight but some lol

...or if you're energy use is always more than production....

Seriously, the meter is owned by the DNO - No one has tampered with it so what business is it of ours to investigate their problems?

Here is my view on this.
If your meter is running backwards after you have installed a PV system it could be deemed as fraud and the customer could be liable, it is best to notify the meter owner (it is not always owned by the DNO) and keep proof of your notification, this way the customer would be covered if there was ever a problem.
Also, and all customers should check this, some meters do run backwards when PV is producing, however, some meters still add to the import, so legal or not you may not always be benefiting.
I hope this helps

We had a similar call out and the issue was with the grid (which they admitted). Voltage was too high.
