I am sure about 450mm. 600mm is over design and is a consultant wasting other people's (mostly their clients) money without good reason.

Only in your world maybe!! As stated, commonsense comes into play here. The areas that your table indicate are for public utility areas, where one would hope that permanent drawing records are held of all such cable routes and runs. Where any excavation work being undertaken, will require contractors being officially made aware of the presence of such buried cables. This is not the case in the majority of cases, especially in private installations and home owners back/front gardens etc!!

i don't do homes, I do commercial work and have provided the information I use. I also stated in earlier post that I believed that a depth of 250mm is suitable for domestic and asked for assistance in this statement (none was received). I only offered my suggestion as there was a few methods of installation that I felt we're non compliant (in my opinion) getting suggested.

Your post in particular appears to knock the content of previous posts without offering any useful content or suggestions.

what exactly is your common sense approach for laying a cable in a dwelling?

I think i made myself perfectly clear what the commonsense approach would be for a dwellings garden!! It's certainly not 250mm.... A minimum of 2 X a garden spade or fork length, or 600mm!!

It's also important to point out, that whatever the trench depth is, it should be free of any sharp stones and other debris. And should have a good layer of compacted bedding sand to lay the cable onto, along with a decent covering of sand before a relatively stone free soil back fill. It's highly unlikely that protection tiles are going to be utilised in a garden install, but a warning tape should always be provided at around 150mm below ground. Personally i always carry out a sheath test on all direct buried SWA cables before terminations are made...


I do however agree with you on some of the other methods being suggested here!! ...lol!!
