I have recently been asked to surge protect a family friends wind turbine. It's about 30-40foot high and it's something I've never done before. Any ideas?
I have done a lot of looking into it and it looks like a much bigger job than I originally thought.
I've read that it will most likely need multiple surge protectors... one for the outer casing and more as close to all the machinery at the top as possible.
I'm thinking of telling him to get a specialist to do it because last time lightning struck his wind turbine it cost him 10grand to fix.
Thought I might as well make a post here to see if anyone has any ideas or knows of any online guides before I pie the job off.
Thanks in advance.
Edit - I spoke to 3 other electricians about this already and 2 of them where honest and said they don't know and 1 of them said they did but didn't want to tell me because it's a "million pound secret" the later was a random guy I met on site before.
Oh and I'm going to charge barely for the labour for this and I'm willing to spend as much time as I need because to know this for the future would only be a good thing.

Worth a read:

From the title and first post it is not clear whether you are looking to install surge protection or a lightning protection system (LPS) or is it both

On a structure like a mast or tower that is already built it can be difficult to retrospctively install a safe and functional LPS without creating more problems than the one you are trying to solve

I would suggest that you as I have done in the past speak to the technical people at A. N. Wallis or ABB Furse for advice on installing an LPS while you may not actually do the install you will get an understanding of what is likely to be needed or whether it is even viable to install it to the existing structure.
